i need some new blues.....
Edited on Tue Nov-25-03 10:07 AM by bearfartinthewoods
nothing with brass..except a little saxaphone wouldn't freak me.
nothing jazz-y.

basic guitar, bass and a little beat drum...piano or harmonica is good too.

delta blues..is that the correct phrase?

if you know big brother and the holding company with one great broad, and think of 'ball and chain', 'turtle blues' or 'summertime', or the music from the moveie "crossroads' (i think), you'll know what i'm looking for.

got anything for me?

ON EDIT The movie crossroads is the one with the guy who played in the karate kid movies..NOT the brittany movie. the plot is a kid hears a legend that if he goes to a certain crossroad down south he can make a deal with the dewvil to become a righteous blues player.
great sound track athough the karate kid guy still can't act.

His album "The Blues Don't Bother Me" is a good one. And, yes, it's the Matt "Guitar" Murphy of Blues Brothers fame.

The Allman Brothers just released a new 2 CD set. It's the Allman Brothers at the Atlanta Pop Festival from 1970. Duane is on it. It kicks ass.

8. Try RL Burnside
Some of his newer stuff throws in some techno touches (which I kinda like, personally).

But his older stuff kicks ass. Try the albums "Too Bad Jim" and more acoustic "Mississippi Hill Country Blues"

13. Alan Lomax
There is a new compilation from the Alan Lomax collection, endorsed by Martin Scorsese that I just got for my birthday that has some wickedly good licks.

If you want to go a bit deeper into world music and its influence on the Blues, Lomax has an enourmous collection with some of the best music ever recorded.

My all-time favorite is The Anthology of American Folk music compiled by the great musicologist (and alchemist, anthropologist, artist, etc.) Harry Smith.

Between Smith, Lomax and John Hammond, much of this country's "root music" was saved from destruction. Go down this path and you have a whole world of old music available to you. Good luck.

16. No, no, no....
Delta Blues is the folk blues, baby. You're describing "Chicago blues" with all those insufferable instruments and guitar solos. Delta blues is about the song, the singer, and the guitar or piano (in that order). Generally speaking, other instrumentation is considered superfluous.

Whereas I personally love rock & roll, jazz, country, soul/R&B, symphonic music, et. al.; this is the style of blues I prefer -- just one man (or, occasionally, woman) self-accompanied on guitar or piano.

I suggest Skip James, Charley Patton, Mississippi John Hurt, Bukka White, Son House, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Robert Johnson (the legend of whom being that which the movie "Crossroads" is based upon), and Brownie McGhee.

19. Oh, and if you DO want all those drums & such...
I reccomend some more recent stuff: I second Astarho's reccomendation of R.L. Burnside, and would add the Bassholes, Bob Log III, the first two White Stripes albums (their more recent stuff probably strays a bit farther from the blues than what you're looking for), Paul "Wine" Jones, the Black Keys, and the late Junior Kimbrough.

You'd probably be happy with either of the "Not the Same Old Blues Crap" compilations on Fat Possum Records.

Check out Skip James first. Especially Yazoo Records' "Complete Early Recordings" album. It's mastered from the original 78s, so it's a bit scratchy, but oh! "Devil Got My Woman" is one of those songs that will change your life.

He plays an awesome slide guitar. John Monney is also pretty good, but I'm very biased since he is an old friend.

Anders Osborne is good, but he uses a Sousaphone for bass and has a sax player in is band.

Also, Snooks Eaglin, who is not new, but rather newly rediscovered, is a very good blues guitarist.

Those are all New Orleans blues players.

Check out his 1980's stuff. Really good overlooked artist had 15 minutes of MTV rotation when Stevie Ray Vaugn hit. Except his is a straight up old school blues man.

He is electric but has an older feel to his stuff.

Don't know any new school Delta Country Blues men.

26. A few suggestions:
You can never go wrong with:

Albert Collins
Buddy Guy
Little Walter
Charlie Musselwhite
Koko Taylor
Lonnie Brooks
E.C. Scott
Debbie Davies (protege of Albert Collins)
Deborah Daniels

Also, see if you can find "Live from Austin" by Delbert McClinton. It's one of my favorites. Some of Delbert's other stuff can come off as Country-ish, but "Live" is a blues masterpiece in my opinion. He's one of those guys that is better live than in the studio.

Edited on Tue Nov-25-03 11:45 AM by Bluzmann57
Luther Allison and his son Bernard, Kenny Neal and the whole Neal family, Tab Benoit. The whole Baton Rogue Blues scene. Its all good. I believe someone else mentioned Robert Randolph. That young man is REAL good. Had the good fortune to see him a couple of weeks ago. Walter Trout is a phenomenal guitarist, although some may consider him more of a rocker than a Blues guy. Eric Sardinas. Hope these names are helpful. If you want more, let me know. After all, I am Bluzmann. lol On edit, how could I forget Buddy Guy? Always a good choice.

28. this guy ain't delta blues....
....but you need to check him out. his name's fenton robinson. he's been around a while....i saw him many times in chicago. pick up his cd titled "somebody loan me a dime" on alligator records. you'll be glad you did.

also, the albert collins suggestions are great. he's not delta blues either...he was actually from texas but he lived in chicago when i was growing up. he was always one of my favorites. i used to see him play at biddy mulligan's on sheridan road in chicago in the 70s and 80s.

as for delta blues, the suggestions above are great....one they missed is etta baker. actually, she's more piedmont blues. very soulful, clean fingerstyle acoustic blues. she's a national treasure. check out her cd "one dime blues". there's also a library of congress cd from the 50s with a bunch of her old recordings on it....i can't remember the name of it but it's somewhere in my collection at home and i can dig it up if anyone's interested.

also, don't forget reverend gary davis.

i'm sorry but he's horribly over rated. Comparisons to stevie ray make me ill.. he plays lead, that's pretty much it. he copies other people's songs and renames them, overally i'd say he's average at best, and not deserving of the accolades that he has gotten.

when he starts singing and performing in a 3-piece band as the front man, then i'll start paying attention. seeing him at G3 in lauderdale was enough to make me ill...

i think he's a much better musician, has some great pipes and manages to play original music. and when he does a cover tune, he actually does it instead of changing lyrics and renaming it to credit himself..

there's a big difference between being influenced by an artist, and being a total freaking copycat.

He's what, 18? Not bad. He can't control what others say about him.

I don't know where he gets his songs, but I think they are well dome. And that singer shows flashes of great pipes. St. Clair or something?

Isn't KWS's mentor Bryan Lee? Not a bad mentor.

BTW, if you like to listen to these young guys coming up, you might also check out Derek Trucks (son of Butch Trucks from the Allman Bros.) He's more jazzy. He's playing Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter stuff on his guitar that is really interesting to listen to.

electric:

The Nighthawks (Jimmy Thackery guitar, Jan Wenner best blues harpist ever)

Another shout out to Elmore James and Muddy.

Check out Fleetwood Mac's first album. They were a blues band before they brought the girls in. I think it's just called Fleetwood Mac. Damn good stuff. (edited here to add: you want to make sure this is the album with Peter Green).

Johnny Winter did an album with Muddy called "Hard Again". Great stuff.

Delta:

Furry Lewis
Mississippi Fred McDowell

and there's a new kid named Richard Johnston out of Memphis. One cd so far, and a live one coming in January. He sometimes plays this (electric) guitar made out of an actual cigar box with tree branches for a neck. Excellent slide player. Really into the country blues. Here's his website (He makes and sells his own cd's. His "label" is "FTRC records" = F*** The Record Companies)
