Weeeee! i just got fired!! |
|
Looks like i've joined the ranks of the unemployed here.. Got canned this morning by my inept boss under direction from his father. It seems i've had too many "go backs" in my apartment painting company. Funny thing is, they never told me that i had any, they just told me i had recieved several in the last few weeks and they had to let me go. At a recent meeting they said they would fire anyone that had more than two go backs because it looked bad for the company, i immediately asked if they were telling people that their work was not living up to expectations, and he said yes. Then i get fired for it without any warning.. go figure.
oh well, i freaking hated that job anyway, and i've already applied for unemployment online. Looks like i'll hit ebay with a bunch of crap laying around that i don't need to pay for xmas.
anyone want to buy an industrial airless spray rig?
Funny thing is, i'm not even remotely upset about it..

1. Congratulations....I think? |
|
Do you have a way of perhaps checking with the customers to see if there were "actual" go backs? Could this be an excuse? I don't know, just throwing it out there since they said they would notify you when that happened. Good luck on the market

The people who run the company are really poor businessmen, they don't like to make any kind of effort to keep things in order. I get sent to really low income housing to paint, and the places are just trashed so it's very difficult to do a good job without taking a major pay cut. I know there are many people in the company that scam on billing hours, and skip better than half of the apartments they paint, i pretty much paint everything each time i do a unit. I guess they expect me to sit around and wait for everything to dry so i can be sure nothing comes back through, of course they give me 3 a day to paint so.. do a great job, and make sure to get all this done while you're at it!!

2. How does unemployment work |
|
I'm going to be out of work in 2 weeks.
How long does it last? When does it come back? What makes one elligible?

6. i think you have to be working for a year |
|
i did it online here..
it works from the day you were fired/laid off, based on a % of your salary. i think eligibility is just working for a year, not sure about how you lose your job as it affects the payout. I know some employers will fight it, but i'm not sure how it works to be honest.

7. you get unemployment for six months, I believe |
|
And unless you were fired for stealing something or killing your boss, you're pretty much eligable.

I've never been fired or laid off but I know this is coming. The hints dropped everyday and the waiting are probably worse than the actually being fired. I almost feel physically sick with the constant worry.
I've looked online here in WV about unemployment and you can see what your check will be based on the earniings your employer reported. You have to have been employed a certain length of time during the previous year but I can't remember the length required. It looks to me like you get 6.5 months of payments while out of work. The thing is you must be out of work through no fault of your own and I don't know what reason will be given when I'm fired (it's a personal issue not business related). Employer can also contest the unemployment benefits.

10. It varies from state to state....in Minnesota... |
|
....when I got lay-off from Kodak, I received 334.00 a week. but some states are not so generous.

Unemployment is paid through a previous employer who fires you or lets you go. You apply at the state unemployment office. (Some have online applications) the day you are let go apply - if there is severance pay or something you won't get any money until after that runs out.
Note that once you find a job you will later be taxed that year on the unemployment income you received, so be prepared to pay taxes that year. You will rarely be denied unemployment - even if you were fired for cause.
Usually you are required to go to interviews during the process of collecting unemployment, to prove you are looking for a job. When I drew unemployment in Virginia in 1992 you needed to prove you submitted resumes for at least three eligible positions.

5. They lied...they just hired some illegal Mexicans for minimum wage that |
|
have to provide their own paint...happens here in El Paso all the time. management thinks that they can save so much money with illegal aliens that once i was replaced by 4 of them... and i was only making $6 an hour.

8. No, we have(had) pretty good quality painters.. |
|
I'm not going to diss my boss because he's a pretty good guy, he wasn't very happy about letting me go. It's a small company of about 30 people, we make a pretty high wage for the amount of time we spend painting, average guy pulls down about 35k or so. What gets me is that i burn through just as much paint as anyone else, and he somehow thinks i'm not painting the units..
whatever, i was growing more and more sick of it as the days went by.
