hu hu hu hu how do you hu cure hu hu the hu hicchups hu
the most endearing thing my ex-wife taught me (besides changing the door locks when couples break up) was how to cure the hicchups.

take a tall glass of water, and drink it from the opposite side of the glass by tilting the glass away from you, sticking your chin in the glass and drinking all the water.

this cure has never failed,

hu hu hu

oh shit, 99% of the time

hu.

15. I've never understood why that works
I mean, what does swallowing sugar have to do with diaphragmatic spasm? but my ex-husband swore by it, and one time when I was too desperate to sneer at that remedy as I normally would have, I tried it. It worked. BUT WHY??? Whatever, it's not failed me since.

It makes no sense, but it does work.

2. Put teaspoon full of sugar in your mouth and let it dissolve.
Tried and true, but not for diabetics! :)

If you can stand to, take a large gulp of vinegar. Cure my hiccups every time.

7. I've heard that pinching your earlobe can help...
Somehow it distracts your nervous system.

I don't know -- it works about half the time for me, but I don't know whether it's actually working, or if the hiccups were just going away anyway...

8. slow your breathing down...
by concentrating on something very hard: pick up any reading matter, look at any paragraph, count the letters in each word slowly and deliberatively and keep a running total...by the time you get to 100-200 your hiccups will be gone!

11. You may need to see a doctor if it persists?
Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but actually hiccups can be a serious health hazard and can even cause death. There are medications that can be given for it. Good luck.

13. Failproof cure
Stand with your arms straight up above the head, as though you're being arrested. Have someone hold a glass of water for you to drink. Keep drinking a little beyond the point when you can't stand it anymore. The hiccups should be cured. If not, repeat. They are almost always cured after the second attempt, usually after the first one.

16. I don't think the water...
is necessary. Just stretching your hands up as high as you can over your head will work. It stretches out the diaphragm I think and stops it from spasming.

17. It's the gymnastics that aren't necessary
Take a tall glass of water, pinch your nose, hold your breath and drink from the glass (~20 swallows) until you feel a drowning sensation. Stop drinking and take a deep breath. It has something to do with starving the diaphragm and stomach of oxygen, which forces them to relax and--voila!--no more hiccups.
