Weird Foods Your Mom Made You As A Kid That You Liked? |
|
my vienna sausage thread got me thinking...
when i was a kid, Mom used to make SPAM and Cream Cheese sammiches. used to LOVE them.
recently smelled SPAM for the first time in about 15 years and almost HURLED (considered calling her on her "child abuse" :D )
anyhoo, anyone else used to eat strange shit they can't stand now?

Yup; mom would take the bologna slice, toss it in the frying pan until it curled up slightly and got "browned". Tasty then, but I haven't tried it in years. I suspect I'd hate it because I don't even like cold bologna now.

Except my mom never made them when I was a kid. Not sure if she didn't like them herself, or she just knew none of her kids would eat them.
But now as an adult they're my favorite vegetable - steamed and with some butter. Yumm.

...dip it all in MILK, and FRY the whole thing. Is it weird or what? Greasy as hell. Years and years later I finally connect the dots and remember Dad had to anticipate his retirement and we were living on (reduced because of the anticipation) benefits. As a child, I didn't even notice anything was wrong, we would have weird lunch and the toys started getting scarce, but the official line was that everything was normal. They held on nicely, my folks. Couldn't have asked for better parents.

My sister got this from the carpenter who built our house. Turns out he was Italian. She was 4 years old or so when the house was being built. The carpenter would share his lunch of sardines and saltines with her. :D

It involved stewed tomatoes, cornstarch, and sugar, in a ratio that I never bothered to learn. Spread it on bread, and eat away....
My mouth waters just thinking about it. Next time I go up to see M & D, I think I'll suggest that for dinner.

She would wrap a hot dog in a slice of American Cheese and put it on a bun and then she would pour ketchup on it and wrap it in foil and bake it in the oven until the hot dog was hot and the cheese was melted. Everyone that I use to know as a kid always comments on my Mom's Bozo Circuses Hot Dogs.

48. She called it goulash |
|
but its resemblance to actual Hungarian goulash was nonexistent. Elbow macaroni, cheese, and a tomato sauce with hamburger. Basically what they call cheeseburger macaroni now. She used to put corn in it, too.
I liked it. I don't eat hamburger anymore, but it's still a form of comfort food to me, with ground chicken or turkey instead of hamburger.
One of my favorite desserts was the way she made cinnamon toast - not weird, but I don't see many other people make it this way. Lightly toast the bread, butter it (real butter works better), mix copious amounts of cinnamon with a little brown sugar, spread thickly on buttered toast, put under broiler until the sugar bubbles and melts. YUMMY. Serve with hot cocoa!
