How would you pronounce the word "ghoti," using standard |
|
Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 10:05 PM by Redstone
Edit: Never mind. I should have known that a large numbers of DUers would be familiar with this. As noted below, it's too bad I don't belong to any freep sites; I could have had them wondering for DAYS.
English pronunciation for the letters it contains?
Hint #1: It rhymes with something many of us eat.
Be honest. No Google. You can either figure it out, or not. I'm trusting you not to cheat.
You have thirty minutes. Second hint in fifteen minutes.

Follow their directive. :-)
phiche isn't as good ghoti, but then, ghoti is the top of the line, so I had no choice but to go lower.

don't elucidate eny more than you already have. Let's see who picks up on it.
But I'll give you the prize even though you didn't type the actual answer (actually, especially because you didn't; that would have shortened my fun by a bunch)...you were first, after all.

25. So. Not even 25 minutes, and four or five of you knew. How do you |
|
think this question would do over at FR or another freeper site? Think ANYONE would be able to answer it?
(But don't anyone bother posting it Over There, because I'm sure they've already seen this thread, given how obsessed they are with us.)
The fact that so many DUers know this obscure bit of Shawism, says we're a pretty bright bunch. You all may now pat yourselves liberally on the backs, because you deserve it.

/fɪʃ/
However, in Hindi, it would be /gʱot̪iː/,
And in Old Irish, it would have been /ɣotʃi/. Yay! Fun with Unicode!

So it's been around for a long time. Probably even freepers know it.
