just looking for reactions to help me process the implications
this was in tvguide. fine source, fine. caught my eye and kind of shocked me.
i can see many rednecks would find the titles interchangeable. and feel threatened by a jackson credit. whereas the prodigy piece could be a downright anthem, eh? - now, no kneejerks here folk, aah'm white trash, n canno have people objectin to mah speakin m'culchah.

i have to go back to work, so i won't be reading responses, or replying till later. but please tell me if you think i'm wrong feeling kind of unnerved by the following contrast and what it says about that good ol powerful heartland - well, ok, nothing new - sadly - no real surprise, but...
well, just wondering what you think.
thank you!

here is the piece. actual (pre-tvguide) origin unknown:

An Indiana high school marching band has dropped Michael Jackson's "Thriller" from its songlist for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The band's director told the New York Times that in light of the child molestation allegations facing Jacko, the tune would not be "appropriate for the morals and the ideals and the sense of pride" the parade represents. Instead, the band will play "Smack My Bitch Up" by Prodigy.

lyrics

4. weirder and weirder. oh, and nytimes link
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/22/nyregion/22BAND.html

from the times article:

-snip-
Instead, in a late scramble to keep everyone happy in Herald Square on Thursday, the marching band from Bloomington High School North in Bloomington, Ind., will strike up "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A." by John Mellencamp.
-snip-

i don't have those lyrics, but....

now, i am puzzled why tvguide would write what it did with no <sarcasm/> tag, but i guess they made an excellent point. it sure got me!

okay. so. call this entertainment, wid a bit o soshul filosofy t'rown in, eh?

might this be my bad?

off to work!

(mods: can't blame you if you want to remove this.)

5. john mellencamp's lyrics
definite improvement. though ironic, as he was boycotted way back when, remember? because of that cover depicting violence against a womon - ? vague memory. just irony.

R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.
John Cougar Mellencamp

They come from the cities
And they come from the smaller towns
Beat up cars with guitars and drummers
Goin crack boom bam
Chorus
R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.
R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.
R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A., Yeah, Yeah!
Rockin' in the U.S.A.
Said goodbye to their families
Said goodbye to their friends
With pipe dreams in their heads
And very little money in their hands
Some are black and some are white
Ain't to proud to sleep on the floor tonight
With the blind faith of Jesus you know that they just might, be
Rockin' in the U.S.A.
Hey!
Voices from nowhere
And voices from the larger towns
Filled our head full of dreams
Turned the world upside down
There was Frankie Lyman-Bobby Fuller-Mitch Ryder
(They were Rockin')
Jackie Wilson-Shangra-las-Young Rascals
(They were Rockin')
Spotlight on Martha Reeves
Let's don't forget James Brown
Rockin' in the U.S.A.
Rockin' in the U.S.A.
Hey!
