Actually I hear this all the time - English is my partner's second language. He HATES the English language because there are no real rules to follow, and if there are, there are so many exceptions that the rule becomes useless.

But everytime I type the word wierd, or their or whatever.. that stupidass saying goes through my head.. and it's all for naught!!

was "i before e, except after c, or when pronounced like a as in neighbor or weigh". There's a longer version that includes other specific exceptions, such as weird.
