I wrote a fan letter to Uma Thurman.
Edited on Tue Nov-25-03 09:09 PM by rbnyc
I haven't written a fan letter since I was 15. It's a strange impulse, but I decided to follow it.

Dear Uma,

I saw Kill Bill a few weeks ago and I’m writing to thank you for your part in creating The Bride. I thought the film was beautifully shot, I loved the way the story was shown, but your character has really stayed with me.

I want to thank you for and the will and the strength The Bride has helped encourage in me. I want to thank you for the rage she has expressed for me. I want to thank you for giving me a champion, a private heroine, a ready image that I can recall when I need it, a little help.

At 11:30 pm on July 24th I was getting a ride home to Brooklyn from Stony Brook, Long Island. I was 10 weeks pregnant and getting married on the 26th. A girl hit my side of the car squarely at about 70 miles per hour, compressing my seat into a 4-inch space. I woke up in a mangled car, covered with blood, my mouth full of glass, and my life completely changed. I lost the baby that took us 2 years to conceive. I’ve spent the last few months re-learning how to walk.

When Black Mamba woke up in that hospital bed and realized what she’d lost, I felt very distinctly understood. It was really painful to watch, but that’s right. It hurts. It hurt then and it hurts now. If I actually took the lid off and expressed the extent of my grief, I’d have to…well, hmmm…I’d have to go on a murderous rampage of blood-spouting retribution.

I can’t really do that. For one thing, in my case, no one actually deserves it, not even the 2 very stupid drivers who are at fault. For another thing, it’s wrong. That’s why we have stories. That’s why we have archetypes and legends and heroes. I identified with her as she took revenge, and I got some satisfaction.

When I’m walking with my cane, I think of her and I remember to look up instead of down. It’s easy to feel old and ugly when your pregnancy has been slammed out of you and your muscles are re-growing from soup. I can think of her in the back of that truck ordering her toe to move, and it helps me remember that I’m hot and I’m sharp and I have a purpose.

We did not postpone the wedding. Our friends and family were all in town already. They came from all over the country. We felt that putting off the wedding would be like saying to them, it’s not important enough that you’re here, we want the big white tent, and music and the dress and the flowers floating in the pool and the dancing. The nurses wheeled my bed into the orthopedic gym for the ceremony. Afterwards I sent everyone to the reception to eat all that food, and I went to sleep.

It was an amazing day and I don’t regret it. But when I look at the pictures and see myself getting married in a nightgown that had to be sliced down the back and put around me because I couldn’t sit up, and see my husband standing next to my IV poll, and the henna painting one of my bridesmaids had done to cover the cuts on my hands, part of me just feels robbed.

I saw my baby’s heartbeat the day before the accident, and started a scrapbook with the sonogram picture. That’s the only thing that’s in that book. All the rest of the pages are blank. I still don’t know what to do with it. I see it on my dresser and it’s hard.

I have a lot of things going for me and I have a lot of support. I have no patience for being disabled and I’m recovering very quickly. I have a lot of good days, but it’s rough. I just wanted to thank you for giving me something that I can use.

If you wanted to create a character that would reach into people and inspire them, you did a really good job.

Sincerely

René Bouchard

4. I mostly wrote it for my own therapy.
One one hand, I feel boring and tedious because everything is about the accident for me. But on the other hand, I gotta work it out and it helps to write about it and talk about it. I'm so, so lucky to have people in my life like you and other DUers, and friends and family who really care.

SO LUCKY!!

...I used to write a lot of fan letters in my early teens, and they always wrote back. I will let you know for sure if she does.

6. WOW, Real life heros here at DU!
I hope Uma plays you in the movie after you write the book! You are truly a gifted person to go through so much and think about the people around you.

And I do hope you and your husband do write that book. This is the type of story that is 1 part tragedy and 3 parts inspiration!

Good Luck!

9. That's not a bad idea.
Everyone said, write about it. And I've kept a journal. But I hadn't really thought about writing abook. I should write a book.

Deep, complex, wonderful, and rich beyond material compare. Don't you ever lose this core part of your being. :loveya:

You have been through so much more than anyone deserves in 5 lifetimes. You will have better times ahead. I am never wrong, so take heed. ;-)

10. That's such a nice compliment.
Thank you. I also think better times are ahead. More than that, I think they are more likely to be ahead if I think so.

Thanks for the help.

11. That is a very stirring
letter to Uma! I think maybe Uma will be strengthened by your letter, too, because her husband recently left her for someone he met on "location" and although she is an amazingly strong person it can only help to know she has been so inspirational for you!

I loved Uma in Quentin's "Pulp Fiction", and am looking forward to seeing this creation.

Glad you are improving so fast, Rene!
Thanks for sharing your story.

18. The violence is very stylized.
It is very bloody, but it's so stylized it has a much different feel than say, the shower scene in Scarface.

What an inspiring letter, from a truly inspiring person. If anyone is going to understand the agony of losses like yours, it's another mom.

This is the kind of letter that anyone receiving it would frame, and refer to it often.

16. Awesome Letter...
That is really moving and I can totally see how Uma Thurman would appreciate reading it. I loved Kill Bill, Volume 1 and cannot wait for Volume 2 to come out. I hope she responds back to you, I really think she will, she seems like a really honest, good person from all that I have seen of her in interviews, etc. Perhaps Quentin Tarantino would appreciate hearing about your feelings about Uma's character as well, since he wrote it and designed it specifically for her...No big whoop, but I am a huge Tarantino fan, so just a thought!

I guess since she embodied the character I felt more connected to her. I should write to him to.

:hi:

I can't wait for Vol. 2 either.

EDIT: But I also think that they came up with the character and the story together, didn't they?

The character was her original idea and QT expanded on it. I saw them talking about their collaboration on HBO or some cable channel.

Uma will surely be touched when she gets that letter.

22. Poor Uma is sooo ugly.....My top 5 uglies...top 5 beauties
Here is my list of ugly women who are supposed to be beautiful
Lauren Hutton--Doesn't she have gapped front teeth?
Jenifer Aniston--Did a bee sting her in the nose?
Carolyn Bessette--A tall skeleton with hair pulled back tight
Uma Thurman--eyes are in 2 different time zones; tall, ugly
Madonna--Looking more like a caricature of Bette Davis every day

And now the most beautiful..
Grace Kelly--You just can't get any better than that
Catherine Zeta Jones--What she sees in that old fossil she's with
is a total mystery
Cheryl Ladd of the 1970's--Classic beauty..just a level under Kelly
Salma Hayek--Curvy and gorgeous
Ava Gardner--Modern actresses beware..never play Ava and have
your looks compared to hers. (Although Kate
Beckinsdale is pretty hot)

31. Uglies and Beauties
Beauty is as beauty does.

Tastes in "eye candy" may differ, but once the photographs are put away, beauty is a lot different.

Natalie Maines is somewhat odd-looking, and overweight. Janeane Garofalo is short, also a little stocky, and has unfashionably dark hair. Alison Janney was relegated to supporting-actress roles because she was too tall and wasn't sufficiently demure. And so it goes.

And how about Sophie Scholl? Mavis Leno? Or Cheri Honkala? Not bad lookers by any means, but they'd last about 30 seconds in a modelling agency.

I think rbnyc also fits the description of "beautiful", too. As does Uma Thurman. There is a lot of beauty among the women -- and men -- of the world that does not photograph as well as we'd like.

We'll just have to invent a better camera.

34. Thanks.
Also, I wonder if I had posted a fan letter to, let's say, Wallace Shawn if somebody would have said, oh poor Wallace, he's so short and bald. I somehow doubt it. I think everyone would have talked about the content of the letter.

But then again, when I talk about Dennis Kucinich, there are always a couple people who have to say he looks like an elf.

At least most people talked about the substance.

Thanks again for your post.

37. Oh God, Jeanine Garofalo is SOO HOT
She is an unconventional beauty, but something about her makes me weak in the knees. I think it's her streetwise demeanor coupled with her dark good looks. But I tend to like short curvaceous women, anyway. I would have put her on my list if I'd been thinking.

27. Great letter--great part, too. Never been one like it.....
When I heard what the plot was for Kill Bill, it immediately resonated with me--and I'd not remembered a time when a female had a revenge story in film. If she's going to go on a rampage, that is one damn good reason to go on one.

Your letter is of course as wonderful as everyone else has said. I thought you looked absolutely beautiful on your wedding day, and I'm glad to hear you're physically recovering at a good pace. I hope the emotional recovery is coming along as well.

28. I decided to see a therapist.
I've been having flashbacks and panic attacks. I'm also having strange allergic reactions that none of my doctors can explain. My OB was concerned about the possibility of Lupus, but I think it's psychological.

Mostly I'm doing well, but I can see that I need some more help. I'm just giving myself as much help as I can. I want to get better.

I'm actually almost ready to give up my cane. the only time I feel I need it anymore is on the bus and train.

I'm walking about a mile a day.

:hi:

Thanks for the kind words.
