Somebody dumped another cat in the 'hood....
Seems to be a young Tom, possibly neutered, extremely vocal and so starved for human attention he practically leaped into my arms... Nice looking cat. Must be a house cat, he doesn't have half the fur our ferals does, and he's not all chewed up like the other Toms that cruise through "lookin' for luv" are...

Why do people do this?

1. better than...
putting them in a sack and dumping them in the water, or calling animal control to come put them down.

3. How do you figure?
Those ways are at least fairly quick.

This way, he either gets the shit gouged out of him by the other tomcats, gets into a fight w/a raccoon, becomes a tyre-ornament for somebody's car, or wanders into the wrong yard and who knows what happens....

And no, I can't take him in and my girlfriend already has 3 housecats and they drive her crazy with the litter-scattering...

9. It's not a parallel argument, Tex
Any human being is better equipt to deal with homelessness than a domesticated animal. The animal has a limited concept of the world and his environment, and extremely limited logic and reasoning processes.

Moreover, the death rate for abandoned domesticated animals is astronomical. The death rate for a homeless person in an American city is relatively low.

10. Your average housecat is no better equipped
to survive on his own than a 3-year-old child would be. They have very little understanding of things like cars, mean people, poison, etc. What instincts they have keep some alive, but certainly not most. Ferals lead a pretty unhappy existence.

I hate people who dump animals, I truly hate them. It's abuse. It's also no kindness to people who live in neighborhoods that are dumping grounds; the ferals bring illnesses, parasites, and fights to the domestic pets, and they give animal-haters yet more ammunition to complain about all pets.

We will not learn to value the lives of our companion animals until we stop treating them as disposable.

2. I have a declawed semi-feral cat.....

His name is Logan and someone took the time to declaw and neuter him and then dumped him outside to fend for himself.

He's a bit mean and standoffish, but I like him.

His first night at my house he jumped on the bed and scared the hell out of himself and my boyfriend and my other cat Mariko. He jumped down and my boyfriend tried to pick him up and put him in the other room. Big mistake. The bite he received ended up getting infected and oozing green stuff and he had to take anti-biotics for a couple of weeks. Poor scared baby (the cat, not my boyfriend).

4. Logan LOOKS like a "no-bullshit" cat...
We have 2 calico ferals that live out behind the garage. Miss Kitty, we trappped and had spayed after she got knocked up for the second time (we had ENOUGH trouble fostering out her first litter) and Reesie, who we thought may have been a daughter, but she's tame enough to pick up and has never been preggers.
I figure somebody dumped her after getting her fixed...

Cats come by all the time, stay for a few days, then move along, but the 2 calicos think they own the pl;ace. We don't mind, they keep John Ass-Clap away...

5. Maybe he's just lost?
Edited on Tue Nov-25-03 11:18 PM by FlaGranny
I lost a cat once about 5 years ago and I still look for her. Went to all the shelters, made multiple phone calls, and read all the ads for months. I still think about that little kitty and hope she found a good home.

Soooo, don't forget to post his picture in a couple of shelters and check the "lost" ads. Someone's heart may be broken.

Edit: One of the problems with keeping cats in the house always is that if they ever do get out, they don't know how to find their way back home.

11. Microchip, microchip, microchip!
A house pet that gets out and doesn't know how to get home again can get a free ticket home if they have a microchip. The chip can't come off, be removed, get hidden, etc. Most shelters and many vets now can scan a found pet for a chip, and if one's found, they can usually reunite them with a frantic owner.

Mine are microchipped, and I hope to all that's holy that if anyone ever finds them outside, they check for a microchip and get my babies home to me.

Two of my three felines are found strays. They are a riot too.

8. Aren't there any cat rescue outfits near you that could
help find this guy a new home? He sounds absolutely sweet, and would probably make someone a wonderful companion.

12. I have one very spoiled rescue kitty, and one stray that has adopted me..
But spoiled princess won't stand for any foreign kitties moving in, so I just feed the stray and give him attention when I see him. He's an adorable little orange tabby with a white chest and socks, about 6 months old. He started coming around when he was just a baby. I did bring him in a couple nights when we had bad weather recently, but I haven't decided if I will try to make my cat accept another family member. Before I do that, I will have to get enough extra money to take him to the vet for tests and shots, and I just can't do that right now anyway. However, we have the most spoiled stays in the area. There are three houses (including me) that put food and water out, so our strays are actually getting kinda chubby!LOL
