What's the most ridiculous Anti-Marijuana ad on TV?
I just think they're ridiculous.
Is it?

1. "This is your beain on drugs." (retro choice)
2. "Drug money goes to terrorists series
3. "Just tell him you were getting high. He'll understand." (Kid by the pool version)

20. so you got a problem with parents controlling their kids?
i have no problem with weed, just as i have no problem with booze, as long as it ain't being used by kids.

that commerical is right on target, a single mother, a kid with friends who are trying to turn on the 13 year old to weed.

and the mother coming on strong about it.

and you have a problem with what the commerical is trying to get across?

i suggest you spend a few days teaching 15 year olds that are stoned out of their minds in a 9am class before you so willing show your ignorance in public again.

BTW i just fired one up, but i'm an adult.

<cough>

25. That's not the problem though...
The problem is when these ads become a condemnation of marijuana use in general, and not just the dangers of its use by those who are too young and/or irresponsible to properly use the drug.

27. the ad i referenced was about a teenager, or did you miss that point?
it was a valuable service because it placed in context the relationship of respect and expectations between the parent and kid and the peer pressure on kids to do drugs.

and please spare me the santimony about bitching that pot ads condemn pot, they do and for reason. it has negative effects on behavior, especially those kids who use it.

i think an adult can handle most things, drugs included, but kids have no sense about drugs.

anytime a reeferhead wants to discuss the value of drugs with me that's fine. i spent 3 years married to an alcoholic and heroin addict, so i've heard all the excuses for drug use.

...in Dad's study. Then one of them pulls a loaded gun out of an unlocked drawer in Dad's desk and accidently shoots the other kid. The problem there is that the kids were smoking pot...no problem with dad having a loaded gun in an unlocked drawer.

5. Mom, the enforcer (here's why, and it's a good one!)
Edited on Tue Nov-25-03 10:26 PM by HypnoToad
My God, the advert doesn't even have Mom telling Junior WHY he's grounded for 50,000 years without the toys, tv, or anything else! When Junior gets cajoled by the drug dealers the second time around, he's more concerned about not getting grounded than anything rational. There's no tie-in with the drug use being bad, stupid, unhealthy, dumb, et cetera!

11. All the Marijuana "It's more dangerous than we all thought" tripe....
Every single one of those commercial is just off.

1. The girl with the pregnancy test that is positive. Apparently getting high was the problem, not unprotected sex.

2. The one with the guy visiting the roadside shrine with the voiceover saying that 1 in 3 drunk drivers tested positive for marijuana. Yeah, driving under the influence is bad, but you can test positive for weeks after smoking pot so it's a bit of a stretch to assume they were actually high at the time of the accident.

3. The one with the two kids smoking pot in the bathroom at the concert who get busted. The only negative effect was getting busted.

4. And of course the one with the loaded gun lying around. I spent a good portion of my teens smoking pot, but I never once shot anyone with the loaded guns that we had in our house nor did anything remotely life-alteringly stupid except eating that crap in the back in of the fridge in the tupperware after I got the munchies.

God I hate those commercials.

18. I think it's got to be...
...the "May I take your order?" one where the two guys are in the car at the fast-food drive-up window, and they just *happen* not to go anywhere until suddenly a little girl on a pink bicycle rides out from nowhere in front of them -- *then* they drive into her. Yeah, that's realistic, all right. My ex-stoner fiance (SUNY smoking champ one year) says that the worst part about trying to drive when you're stoned is waiting for that first stop sign to turn green. (I think he's kidding; at least I hope he had more sense, even back then, than to drive while stoned.)

By the way, did any of you see the Nov. 10 issue of Forbes magazine? The cover feature is an article called "Inside Dope" (the illo is a big green five-finger leaf). If marijuana is on the front cover of Forbes, can respectability *really* be that far behind?

31. 'Waiting for that first stop light to turn green'
ohmigawd, that is PRICELESS, priceless, and so true!

I've never seen any of these PSAs - I don't watch TV - so it comes as kind of a shock to me that there's this huge Reefer Madness war against grass going on again. GRASS? Godalmighty, don't we have anything serious to occupy our minds?

Sure, I don't want my kid or my bus driver or my airline pilot stoned - I don't want 'em drunk, either, but I don't see PSAs on the glass teat telling people not to get drink or they'll get pregnant - yet I'll bet a majority of unplanned pregnancies involve alcohol. I know when they first bumped the speed limit down to 55, nearly 95% of highway fatalities after that involved alcohol. I'm still confused why an herb that grows wild on the roadside is the epitome of evil, but fermented grains and fruits that are documented to cause domestic abuse, road rage, sidewalk vomiting, and all manner of bad behavior is okay. Why the huge dichotomy???

Look, I know it's meant to be taken seriously, but for some reason I find the one where the stoned guys are at the fast-food drive-thru and are about to run down the little girl on her bike pretty hysterical. I know, I'm evil. It just doesn't strike (no pun intended) me as realistic. Let's just say the people I've known who have...enjoyed that particular herb were never motivated enough to hop into a car and go anywhere.

Also, there are several in the series that use questionable statistics. I think the commercials say something like "one in three wreckless drivers tested positive for marijuana." The commercials never provide a context for that stat; it's like saying "one in three people who drink 7-Up have Brown hair." Notice the PSA doesn't come right out and blame the wreckless driving on pot. So the association is meaningless.

33. The Statistic They Give Is Even Murkier Than That.
It's one out of every three reckless drives who are tested for drugs, tested positive for marijuana. If you are testing a reckless driver for drugs you have to have a suspicion that he/she is on drugs in the first place. Not to mention that THC can stay in your fat for months. That commercial gets my vote BTW.

22. I heard one on the radio that went something like this:
A little boy calls his father on the phone and is telling him that he is planning on starting a fire in the house. The boy's father is obviously upset and asks where the babysitter is. He replies "she's stoned on marijuana" or something to that effect. The little boy is now going through the list of things he will need for his fire and the dad is freaking out. As improbable as this is already, I want to know what kind of kid tells his parents that he's playing with matches? Dumb, just dumb.

35. Counter Ad Idea
I always thought it would be hilarious to show say a frat house and first they are all enthusiastic about the election and then the year goes on and they start smoking pot and finally one night the election results are on the TV while a haze fills the room and finally one of the guys goes "oh, shit, we forgot to vote" and the voice over come on "Pot. It's more dangerous than we thought."

That would be funny.

37. "1 in 3 roadside drivers that were tested tested positive for marijuana"
I HATE that commercial. So deceiving. First of all, it does't say how they were tested. A urine test would find out if they were high, but other tests show that the person had used it up to a month prior.

Also, think about the stat. 1 in 3 drivers that were tested - meaning they were acting high. Of all the people the cops SUSPECTED of drugs, only 33% were using them. That's actually quite low. The total number of high drivers all year could have been one, but if three were tested that's 33%. They don't show totals.

43. I just seen a new one that has to rank close to #1
Some kid is out by the pool and it is implying that she is going to fall in. Then it says something like "just tell your mom you didnt know she was outside because you were too busy getting high". Now this is dumb for 2 reasons. #1, you could have to tell your mom you didnt know she was outside because you was busy doing your HOMEWORK, or the DISHES, or any other reason that could distract you. #2, Marijuana wouldnt be so easy for kids to get if it was legalized and sold like liquor. Sure it wont make it impossible. But damn near everyone would just go to the liquor store and buy pot rather than having to grow it or buy it on the black market. Here is a link ive been trying to spread around. The best chance of legalization is to have the law enforcement on our side. http://www.leap.cc/
