It has come to my attention that Will wrote a very nasty post about me here on this board yesterday at some point.

I am writing to ask what it is and what the content of the message was, as I did not get to read it until it was erased.

To wit: Life is hard for everyone, and you had a very bad time, but your ingratitude shown to your family was disturbing given the roof over your head and the bed under your ass and the food on your plate they have provided, that life is defined by how one responds to struggle, and that your response has been poor, and that internet forums are no place to go for psychological help, and after 50 posts every day over the course of a month where all the sympathy in the world was shown you plus tons of advice that was never taken, your act had worn very thin.

I did that with pictures, and then erased it.

I pulled them off the internet. I can give you some hints, though. The fact that everyone has a hard life was depicted by the picture of a crowd looking pissed. The mugging you endured was depicted by a man with a gun. Your total lack of perspective about your situation was depicted by several pictures of starving children and dead people, along with pictures of a roof and a bed and food, and the sympathy you have been shown was depicted by Hobbes the tiger hugging Calvin. Stuff like that.

You can't ask that people either agree with you or ignore you. This is a public discussion board, and one of the consequences of posting your thoughts is that people may disagree with you, and they may do so in a way that you do not find pleasant.

I would suggest that instead of insisting certain people ignore you, you instead show a little more discretion in what you say and how you say it. Barring that, just develop a thicker skin.

I didn't specify how I defined public, Carlos--you're inferring. It's public in the sense that anybody can come here and read it. Access to read the board is unrestricted, and as long as you register and follow the rules, access to post is also unrestricted. That's pretty darn public.

I find it ironic that you choose to insult me when this entire thread is about how angry you are that you think YOU were insulted. Irony, I tell you.

called someone out in violation of the rules. Evidently either no one alterted it, your editting made the issue moot, or the mods don't agree with my assessment. It seems to me the same point would have been made with a PM to him and not taken up bandwidth. In any case you owed to him to let him see it after he asked.

But basically he did a picture story on the threads you posted about your problems expressing frustration at the fact that he perceived you as not taking the support offered to you.

He then did the right thing by erasing it.

I didn't see it, if it actually ever did exist.

Most of us have spoken in haste, only to repent at leisure. Hell, I've made many friends after first having crossed swords with them.

DU is "only" a message system community. It's easy to lose one's perspective, and I speak from too much personal experience. Magnanimity is usually preferable to carrying a grudge. And it's so much easier on the nerves.

If I was going to pile on, I would have done it in the first thread he posted on this issue, or the fifth, or the thirtieth, or the forty third, or the fifty first, all of which were exactly the same in tone and tenor, all of which earned him legions of supporters and metric tons of advice, none of which was taken or even repaid with a thank you. I piled on when he started complianing about the 'prison' that was his family's house with no internet. It was called for, imho. Public forums are like that, and I am under no obligation to ignore anything.

but you've got to find a way to deal with your anger. Everything seems to be setting you off right now. Focus on the moment and on what you can do to make things better for yourself.

I don't know a lot, but I've certainly learned that you get back what you put out there. Right now, you are feeling a lot of anger, putting out a lot of anger, and (unfortunately) getting some degree of anger coming back to you. Platitudes aside, you do have some things to be thankful for. These will likely increase exponentially, as you move forward. BUT, you have to let go of some things to move forward.

Get some sleep, Carlos. Things always look somewhat better in the morning.

58. How apropos in this season of thanksgiving

No matter how bad some (even many, perhaps) of us have it, just consider a few things in this season of thanksgiving:

1. Carlos, you got mugged. It could've been worse: your city could have been subjected to "Shock and Awe." Your country could be occupied by foreign troops ...

2. Carlos is living with unpleasant relatives. There are people in this great nation who don't HAVE a roof over their heads, much less a computer to access an internet forum! Alternately, there are people living 15 or 20 or more to a single bedroom apartment/hovel.

3. How many of us here are literally STARVING?? Hell, we've got computers and phone lines and we're talking about what kind of fowl we're going to eat on Thursday, while there are people who don't know where their next meal is coming from, or when it's coming.

I don't mean to sound unsympathetic to Carlos, really I don't. Life does suck sometimes, and Carlos has been through some bad shit. But when MY life has sucked (unemployment, etc.) I just look around at the good things I HAVE in my life: a loving wife and family, a support structure, a roof over my head, etc.

Right now, I have a good job in Mississippi but my family is 600 miles away and I haven't been home in almost two months, but BY GOD I'M GOING HOME THURSDAY!!! And my sweet Baby is fixing a big ol' dinner and my son will be there and my daughter is coming in from college in NYC!!! A lot of folks have it waaaaay worse than I do. I'm thankful for what I have.

It's all a matter of perspective.

Do not talk negatively about an individual in a thread where they are not participating.
