A song just 'bout due to make a comeback, methinks.
Brother, Can You Spare A Dime? Yip Harburg
Once I built a railroad, made it run Made it race against time Once I built a rairoad, now it’s done Brother can you spare a dime? Once I built a tower to the sun Brick and rivet and lime Once I built a tower, now it’s done Brother can you spare a dime?
Once in khaki suits Gee, we looked swell Full of that yankee doodle de dum Half a million boots went slogging through hell I was the kid with the drum Say don’t you remember, they called me Al It was Al all the time Say don’t you remember, I’m your pal! Buddy can you spare a dime?

but really a dime is not going to do much these days.
But I figure that almost everyone can spare a dime, and there are something like 150,000,000 adults in this country. If I can get a dime from 10% of them, then I would be set for several lives.

2. Actually, that's not too shabby an idea. |
|
Except we put the dimes into a heating fund for the poor...

3. the Salvation Army does that every Christmas season |
|
collects loose change with which they help the needy.
The annual budget for the Salvation Army is only two billion. Republicans are planning to cut 8 billion a year from funding programs that help the needy. The Salvation Army is supposed to pick up the slack? That's like 4 Salvation Armies - gone.
And true to my sig quote, they are also planning ten billion a year in tax cuts that mostly go for the wealthy, all the while saying that we need to cut those programs in order to balance the budget.
