Glen Campbell is the man! So ya'll quit hatin' |
|
He is a cool cat who needs to be remembered for more than just a seperated at birth comparision to NIck Nolte.
He came to town from hicktown Arkansas to become a Master sessions player throughout the 60's making imp. music, playing with BeachBoys, ,SInatra, Haggard, others....
He had #1 singles, Gentle on my mind, rhinetone cowboy and Wichita Lineman
Made some hit movies including True Grit
Had a hit TV show.
And I dont even know that much about him.

1. Nobody's questioning Glen's talent |
|
I remember watching his show, btw.
I just wish he could get control of his demons and not squander his talent.

booze and songwriting go together..... thats jus t the way it is.... The last thing I'd want is for him to pull an Al Green and become a born again christian singer.

My spouse is right. Now, I know exactly how I'll look in 27 years. The resemblance is freaky.

2. A few years ago someone told me that he was dead. |
|
And I thought it was true. I am actually ticked off that I was thinking all this time that man was dead and he wasn't. It's not like I was a fan of his but I feel like an idiot that I didn't actually check it out.
But for what it's worth, Glenn, if you're reading DU, I am glad you are alive man.:toast:

15. One of my favorites is "Galveston" |
|
I heard it decades before I moved to Houston. I know now that there's a slight incongruity between the romance of the song and the reality of Galveston.
But I still like it...

I am 110% dedicated to ultra-draconian measures to punish drunk drivers. They get off easy (he was freed on $2000 bail, and he assaulted a police officer yet!), and if they won't seek help for their illness of alcoholism, they need to be locked away for good. They kill, they steal lives. I am dead serious. We're too hard on people for lesser crimes, and too soft on them.
He should never be allowed to drive again, that rat bastard.
5 years ago last week, a matter of 2 or 3 seconds saved my life when a drunk driver hit the vehicle I was a passenger in. The offender had a BAC of .23, and was out of jail by the next morning. We were lucky to walk away from it, but had she hit us just a tad bit later, that would have been it. Drunken loser asswipes do not have the right to decide when my life is over. (Her name was Karen Bush, btw, probably related, was driving a luxury car).
Fuck all drunk drivers to hell, and fuck Glen Cheesy White Bread Music Campbell.

17. ZW, I totally agree with you about the necessity of draconian punishment.. |
|
for DUI and DWI (I also was nearly killed by a drunken asshole), but you're so wrong about Campbell's talent. He not only played on "Help Me Rhonda", blah, blah, blah...but over 700 songs. In the 60s, Campbell and Tommy Tedesco were the go-to guitarplayers for LA sessions. And he does have a beautiful clear voice. There's a reason that the brilliant Jimmy Webb had Campbell singing his songs.

I'm gonna check out Jimmy Webb and all that stuff.... The purpose of my Campbell rant was that I just think folks should appreciate our stars before they're gone....
ZW, I agree, Drunk driving is a big dea and should be dealt with severely.

21. Galveston is actually a sohpisticated anti-war song |
|
Listen to the lyrics. It's about a GI in Vietnam who wishes to hell that he was back home instead of where he is.
And I've always liked ol' Glen and admired his talent. But he does have some demons. And that mug shot looked BAAAAAAAAD!!

24. I once saw GC jam with George Benson on TV. |
|
Could not believe that he could play like that. The man is a monster player. Despite all that hammy, Roy Clark-like, showboat, BS type of playing he normally does. That one tv show, 25-30 years ago, was the only time I've ever seen the man really play. It's a cryin' shame.
Personally, I can't deal with his singing.
