I'm watching "For Your Eyes Only" - the soundtrack and foley work SUCK! |
|
They just SUCK!
The opening song for the show still stands pretty well, though thoroughly rooted in the time it was made.
But the rest of the soundtrack - it reeks of the shittiness of 70s hip shit music, and it totally does not fit the movie at all.
And don't get me started on the foley work - fucking awful. Or if not the foley itself, the mixdown. But let's face it, artistically in the mainstream, the 70s and eraly 80s were pure fucking shit. Pure. Fucking. Shit.
The Roger Moore Bond movies are SO FUCKING DATED it's awful.

2. AWESOME movie - great plot. The music is badly dated, though... |
|
Apart from a few key scenes... (the one where Melina and Bond go down together in their mini-sub starts nice with the violins but quickly degrades into disco-bond... which is sad.)
It's one of the two Moore movies that's worth sitting through; the rest are campy crap.
Moore deserves kudos for his straight performance in FYEO. Especially where he cold-bloodedly kills Locque... Moore objected to doing that scene, but he still did it - without tripping the scene up.
Only the crass ending with the parody of the Prime Minister is anything truly awful, but with 120+ preceeding minutes of joy, I can forgive that one scene. :D

7. Yeah, it really is an otherwise strong script and pretty well acted Bond |
|
Which is perhaps why I so notice the shitty music and the shitty foley work. If it was Moonraker, it wouldn't bother me at all, and I probably wouldn't even notice.

4. I watched one last night with "Domino" And "Fatima Blush" |
|
Characters and Fatima 's character was completely over the top, just outrageous. The names of the female characters alone in those movies are so...dated. Ya" gonna tell me what foley is?

if I recall, is the post-production recording of sounds. Footsteps, car crashes, etc..most are added to the film later.

16. So that was Foley work |
|
that added the slide whistle effect to the car jump scene in TMWTGG? A simply spectacular stunt, rolling an AMC Hornet in midair while jumping a river, completely ruined by the addition of that stupid slide whistle.
Then, in Octopussy, as Bond is escapes from Kamal Khan by swinging from vines, the Foley guy got the bright idea to add a Tarzan yell. Yuck!
Bond movies are supposed to be "tongue in cheek" not tongue sticking out in the form of a rasberry!
BTW, anyone watching the marathon on AMC (which runs through Saturday) should check out the one hour documentary, "Bond Women Forever" they've been airing every so often. Shot in 2002, it features interviews with Bond women as they are now. I must say that Jill St. John still looks damn good and has just the right amount of sass. It was a terrible thing they did to her Tiffany Case character. She started out strong and apparantly equal to Bond but somehow weakened over the course of the film to where she can only shout "eek!" as Bond is getting attacked by the gay henchmen on the ship.
My favorite Bond film remains FRWL. My second fav is probably a toss up between GoldenEye and Goldfinger.

9. ROTFL! Yeah, I suppose I am the only one who would... Khpehra |
|
probably would have, too, Architect bless him.
Thanks for noticing!
I'm not a fan of Moore at all, either. Though I often wonder what kind of Bond Moore would have made if he had had good scripts from which to work; though this script is actually pretty good, but so much of the costumes and sets and situations are so awfully dated as trying to be "hip", it really distracts from the story.

* guess who * that Bond was meant to be a sarcastic character. That hit me as a shock, partly because I didn't want to believe it, but mostly because I had to cut Moore some slack for what I considered the complete annihilation of the Bond saga.
I still don't cut him any slack, because I hate the smug bastard.
Like I posted in my Munich thread, I think Daniel Craig has the potential to be the best Bond ever. And I said this thinking that the wise-cracking smugness of Bond was all due to Moore being a wise-crackin' fuckwit. Now, I have to accept that this DC dude who I thought would be able to put some MEANNESS and Intimidation into the character might have his 'nuts' cut off from the very first frame.
I was looking forward to a decent Bond movie for a change. I still am, but with hesitation.

There were some gems through all those years, yes.
But in the main, lots and lots of awful shit.

17. Bond is mostly just bad male fantasy films |
|
The originals are ridiculous, too, though Connery made them more palatable.
Mike Meyers is dead-on in his "Austin Power" satires. They are almost satires in the original form.
I heard a quote from Roger Moore once where he said he had lunch with Noel Coward once who said to him that any actor who looked as good as Moore did as a young man, and who had as little talent, should take any job offered to him. Moore said that followed that advice every since.
