3. Live root ball tree, later planted in the Berkshires
All the benifits of a real tree, without the guilt or the extreme fire danger.

12. Somebody mention a live root-ball tree?
hee
Miz t. wanted a tall skinny tree last year. She had a VERY definite decorating picture in her head. Couldn't find a "real" one so we bought a tall skinny artificial one. It DOES look nice.
So why do I feel like a sell-out?
I sprinkle a little Pine-Sol on the branches each morning.
;-)

16. We've had artificial for years
My daughter said, "I feel so bad for those trees. They take like 20 years to get reasonably sized, and we chop them down for two weeks worth of inside tree."

The expense is much less, the fire hazard is much less, there is less vacuuming up of fallen pine needles, etc.

All around, the fake trees are the way to go. And Pine-sol??? You can get one of those plug in air fresheners in pine scent and plug it in behind the tree.

Or buy a real wreath.

5. I no longer have light stringing duties at my Mom's house
She bought and pre-lighted fake tree last year. Just plug and play.

I know it's not as good as a real one but it is a lot less hassle.

9. I hate seeing all those beautiful trees chopped
down, then dumped on curbs waiting for the garcbage pickup after christmas. Another of our wasteful, consumer driven habits.

17. 'round these parts, ma'am
we have tree farms specifically dedicated to Christmas trees and they are harvested like any other crop.

By the way, it takes 2-3 years for a typical scotch pine to get to cutting height. They practically grow like weeds.

The tree industry operates like this in all parts of the country AFAIK; you're not sacrificing the national forest to have one any more than you are decimating the prairie to have a bowl of corn pops.

20. We Get Ours
from a farm, too. After Christmas we prop it up in the backyard and put peanut butter pine cones in it for the birds. They love it, and the shelter helps when it's cold. Come spring we grind it up and put it in the mulch pile. Don't EVEN get me started in fake trees, although they do have a place in nursing homes and such.

15. Maine is the state the way life should be so.....
We grow millions of the darn theings and go out as a family with dogs kids and pick one and cut them down on one of many tree farms. We all drink hot cider and have a great time.We invade with three of 4 cars/trucks full of crazy people hunting for the best tree in the state.

19. We have a really cool fibreoptic tree
Yes, I know they're kitschy, but the whole damn "holiday season" is so loaded with kitsch that one more piece isn't going to make a whole lot of difference.

Besides, this one is tres chic. It's like having Las Vegas inside a 3-foot plastic tree.
