SCO targets Linux users
http://www.infoworld.com/article/03/07/25/29NNsco_1.html

Um, shouldn't SCO wait until the law decides that their supposed copyright has been abused? :eyes: It's way too early and nobody should be taken in by these bastards.

At $720 per user license, SCO is really desparate... filthy greedy unscrupled assholes... I hope IBM buys them out.

5. hyperlink patent
SBC, wasn't it?

The real problem is the overly broad granting of patents.

4. Buying them would reward them
We need to shut them up ASAP but buying them out would simply reward the crooked executives and venture vultures who came up with this extortion scheme. I think countersuits are in order, but obviously they'd have to be pursued by somebody with deep pockets.

IANAL and especially not an "intellectual property" lawyer, but from what I have read, registering a copyright means only that one can sue for more than actual damages. I wonder whether SCO might be trying to exploit the fact that most people don't understand the differences among copyright, trademark, and patent law? I've already seen some ignorant posters at Linux sites who obviously thought that registering a copyright was equivalent to getting a patent.

Besides, there is no evidence that SCO is really pursuing a bona fide copyright action--they are making extremely broad claims that Linux (and apparently all other operating systems --and they pointedly didn't exclude Windows) are "unauthorized derivatives" of their ancient code.

7. Congress would support SCO; Linux is clearly a threat to the status quo
Linux damn well proves what a bunch of bullshit the current industry is. Indeed, it spits on the face of capitalism itself, which is so much the better as far as I'm concerned.

Which is strange, people can still sell software for Linux and make money off of it if they wanted. Just because it runs on Linux doesn't mean it has to support the GPL; there are games for Linux whose source code aren't released (Quake 3, Unreal Tournament 2003, SimCity 3000 Unlimited, Terminus, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, etc.....)

But it's the root principle of the thing that terrifies korporate amerika. Free. Their "F-Word".
