Is Dubya the modern day Gerald Ford? |
|
Edited on Wed Nov-26-03 02:45 PM by CatWoman
Or is it Chevy Chase?
I keep seeing awkward pictures of him falling as he tries to make his way out of planes and stumbling out of cars.
Also stories about him mispronouncing states that he's visiting (Nevada comes to mind).
What a stumbling, mumbling klutz!!

2. Yeah, he's a lot like Ford in that respect |
|
but he governs like Nixon and his apologists try to shape his image like Reagan's.
But no matter what, he'll always be ol' Dubya to us.

Gerald Ford was a real moderate repub, and a fairly decent statesman. True, he jacked up the war in Central America (Jimmy Carter jacked it up more, and then Reagan blew the whole thing sky high.)
But as far as Repubs go, I'll take Ford over ANY of the current crop any day!

20. Jimmy carter didn't jack up wars in Central America |
|
He cut off aid to Somoza, for one and put an embargo on Guatemala, which had human rights abuses----It was the Communists that really started it, The Sandanistas won in Nicaragua and then the FMLN in El Salvador started an insurgency with their Soviet Bloc and Cuban aid.

4. Don't insult poor Gerry Ford that way! |
|
I'm from his hometown, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Ford was not a conservative, despite where he is from and was always pretty moderate on the issues. He's not a big oil man, he got shot at by two loony women and was not a bad president. He wasn't even in office long enough to do the kind of damage that W has done.
He was a klutz, however. I don't know if Bush is a klutz, or just if he's drinking again.

5. Ford was a decent human being, whatever his faults |
|
Yeah, he pardoned Nixon. Small potatoes compared to the Growing Evil of this Dark Side administration. Gerald Ford was a decent man; try to find a Republican like him today. Sorry, CatWoman - no comparison.

8. I'm with faygokid; 'Decent' is without a doubt the best descriptive |
|
of Gerald Ford. Decent, kind, moderate, concientious. Maybe not the brightest bulb in the box, but not stupidly determined to get his way in order to make up for that shortcoming. He's not a blundering, bullish, muttonheaded reprobate like the Chimp.

9. Well, thanks, Aristus. Would that Ford, not Bush, was president |
|
I kind of liked Gerald Ford. And I definitely liked Betty, as did we all. What a different world! Gerald Ford, as a long time legislative leader, would not have known what to make of Tom DeLay. I miss that era of honest disagreement. Thanks, Rush!!!! (you bastard).

When I was a sprout. "Which way did he go? Which way did he go? He went for Faygo." The Faygokid shot it out with Black Bart, in the black and white commercials. My screen name is nostalgia for that era. Thanks for asking, and Happy Thanksgiving. And the story on your name is. . .?

16. Aristus. A Latinization of 'Aristocles', which was Plato's real name. |
|
Not comparing myself to Plato in terms of intellect, though. 'Platon' means 'broad-shouldered', Aristocles' wrestling nickname. You do know that Plato was an Olympic champion wrestler, right?
I'm no world-class intellect, or wrestler for that matter; but I do have broad shoulders. :7

Been here awhile, now, gratified that we have found each other. And if you can enlighten me on on MATCOM, we can compete on a level playing field. Please feel free to join in; do not be deterred by my relevant posts. Your insight is welcomed. Not uncritically, of course.

He was left-handed. Some of the incidents were actually other people bumping into HIM or tripping him up because they weren't used to looking after a left-handed president (not since Truman!).
Later on, Reagan, Bush Sr., and Clinton were all lefties, so the Secret Service got used to it ....
George W. is right-handed ... though when I first heard about his speaking gaffes, I wondered if he was a lefty who had been forced to switch (my father had some problems as a result of that).

23. I feel taken, yet I must ask: The acronym MATCOM |
|
I suspect I may be in the position of one with TP in his home's trees, yet I feel compelled to ask about MATCOM, and what it means. You are Everywhere on this board; I am simply a humble servant of those far brighter than me on DU. Should you choose to answer me, I will take it with the requisite grain of salt, I assure you. Yet, there may be hope for dialogue yet. So, what is it?
