Is the weather really weird where you are, too?
I've been wondering about this. Now, granted, Texas weather is pretty much always weird. But lately it's been WAY weirder than normal.

I've been trying to find some kind of Weather Channel discussion forum or something, so I can find out what the pros think about this. We've had highs in the 80s constantly since right after Christmas, we're having a bad drought and the wind just won't stop. Constant high winds.

This isn't normal, even for here. If this keeps up, summer and the bugs will be worse than usual. And we normally have drought conditions in summer, but not right now. Some friends of mine in other parts of the country say it's all wacked out there, too.

So what about your neck of the woods? Weird weather?

1. This is the 25th straight day of rain.
Flooding, mudslides, etc., abound. Plus I'm going pretty stir-crazy.

The sun came out the other day for a couple of hours and I felt like a vampire at dawn. :D

3. So THAT'S where it all went!
Thieves!!!

I used to really like horribly windy days. They kinda make you want to curl up under a blanket.

But I'm starting to understand how they can make a person go insane. It's CONSTANT. For days on end. It's feeling like Chinese water torture, the same sound over and over and over and over and over and over and over....

Sorry about your mudslides. It's weird, we have grass fires because it's so dry. Send some of that here, please!

But sadly, I think airport security confiscated it. ;)

Sorry about the wind. Yeah, I know what you mean about that water torture feeling ... it just never stops and ... auuuugh!

The Snoqualmie Valley is flooding. I wish I had a digital at my shop; I'd take a picture so everyone could see. In the meantime, the rain, rain, rain is really starting to get to me.

flamingyouth, maybe I need to plan a DU Rain Refugees party ;-). We could all go to the Polynesian restaurant on 1st and order drinks with umbrellas in 'em.

If they even had a local-style restaurant in Waikiki, it'd probably be about that expensive, though.

23. Yep. Also in midcoast.
Only snow left is where the shade is on my lawn. Also there was a crazy thunderstorm the other night that woke us all up around midnight. Very loud thunder that scared the crap out of me. (I spent some time growing up in West Texas as a child and am very scared of thunderstorms) I've only been here a year, but I would think this is kind of strange for Maine in January - it sure would have been for the area of upstate NY that I came from.

At one point we thought we were moving to Portland and that all changed within a weeks time so we never know. We are just trying to stay in Maine.

12. It's going to hit 60 today in Maryland
right when we should be having upper 30s and low 40s. This stretch of 2-3 weeks from about January 8 to the 24th or so is supposed to be the coldest part of the winter for us. Instead I had a baby snake sunning itself on my front porch the other day (oh joy). It's supposed to dip into the 40s for the weekend and be back up in the 50s-low 60s next week. We've had very little precipitation which will mean problems in the late spring and summer. We have also had some very heavy dense fogs in the mornings. I absolutely hated the movie The Day After Tomorrow - it scared the bejeebers out of me and I still have the occassional nightmare - but damn if it isn't seeming more plausible.

13. Very warm here in Western PA
Really, really strange weather. Been in the mid to upper 60s for weeks now. Normally at this time of year we have lots of snow and ice and lows below zero every day. January and February are usually brutally cold and windy here, with the lake effect driving heavy precipitation. I've never seen a January this warm. It's really bizarre - it feels like it's April instead of January. I don't know what to wear because all of my spring/summer clothes are packed away and my heavy coats and sweaters are way too warm for the weather - I was sweating to death waiting for the bus this morning when I should have been running around trying to keep warm.

And honestly, it's been kind of freaking me out. It just should not be this warm here at this time of year. I don't know what's wrong with the weather, but something is definitely wrong.

17. That makes more sense, then.
The fact that it's warmer than usual other places, too, that is. I don't have an extensive winter wardrobe, being in Texas, but it is kind of weird to be wearing shorts all the time. And sweating even wearing those. We've had to run the a/c a couple of times. Just unheard of.

Check out these quotes:

Amazingly, Flagstaff had over 83 inches of snow fall by this time last year, but so far this winter has had none!

...However, since there is no cold Arctic air in Canada for these troughs to tap into, only short periods of winter-like conditions are expected in the U.S. over the next ten days. The country remains on track to record our warmest-ever January.

Wow. Warmest-ever January.

We're having fires, too. The high country snowpack is low, so ya'll downstream are going to have pretty much nothing in the rivers come June or July.

Highs are in the 50s, which is not terribly unusual, but the fact that we haven'y gotten any snow or rain in more than a month is unusual.

Let's hope that the snow predicted for Friday and Saturday comes through....

The morning weather guy reminded everyone that the winds would raise the fire danger. We're a bit south of the current fires, although there's smoke in the air.

However, some of our northern suburbs are in pine forests. Kind of like being surrounded by dried-out Christmas trees!

38. Weird in Indiana as well
Lately we've had a few highs in the 50's. We got snow a few times but nothing major, really. The last few weeks have just rain, thunder, overcast skies. And a few creepy-warm days.
Now personally I've only been here 2 years- but the first year I was here, Jan 15th 2 yrs ago, there was nothing but snow the first couple weeks I was here, and it was freezing throughout the season- nothing like what we are seeing here right now. My SO was raised moving back and forth between MI and Indianapolis & Plainfield, and he says that this isn't normal at all.

I come from WA. My gramma has lived there for several decades and says that WA's weather has been completely out of the norm lately as well, even so far as being a lot different than just 5 years ago.

There's been no winter in January. I think one below average day the whole month. I know there have been other warm Januaries (warmest in Philly was in 1932,) but the dandelions come out like it's spring. New Jersey had small hail the other day. I don't like this global warming.

But now today it's colder and overcast.
Snow might be on the way for the weekend!

What crazy weather! :hi:

60. There's NO snow here in Maine.
None. Nada. Everything's a muddy mess from the 50 degree weather we've had the past two days. Two nights ago, we had a burst of rain--and THUNDER/LIGHTNING!!--that left a pond in my backyard.

I'm quite frightened, really.

:scared:

88. Ugggghhhh.....
In January it's SUPPOSED to be cold and snowy, not warm and wet. And I don't want a flipping lake, though I've got one.

:grr:

65. Freaky Deaky in Michigan...
Today the temp got up to 50 degrees. No shit.
I had an appointment with a golf-course manager yesterday and when I got there, the PARKING LOT WAS PACKED!
The guy was just pulling out in a cart to play a round, and I had to reschedule our meeting. For a moment I thought about making a scene and forcing him to meet with me (as a joke)...LOL.
When we made the appointment 2 weeks ago, he didn't expect to be taking investors out for a game!
I asked him if he had ever played in January before, and he said NO. He remembers playing in 65 degree weather at the end of February one year, but never in January, in MICHIGAN!

66. We've had mild winters in the DC area before.
I can recall January temps in the 70s; yet I also remember temps well below 0. I don't doubt global warming exists; but I'm not certain that's what's causing this.

Fall came much later this year than usual, due to a September/October drought.

71. It's been so weird since I moved here..
in late August. Warm weather? Sure, I'll take it, but I know it's unusual for this time of year. We need rain, badly.

70. Northern Michigan here
in the snow belt area. It's January, we have no snow on the ground because it all has melted by now, and temps were in the '40's yesterday. Normally temps are in the teens(at best) and we have had a couple feet of snowfall by now. I was just saying this is really weird weather a couple days ago. Scared about what it all means.

72. Warm (mid '30s) and overcast. In Minnesota, in January.
Except for a cold snap for a few days in mid-December, it's barely been below freezing for weeks. That's just not right.

77. Warm and wet here in Eastern PA
Had the day off yesterday and I took the opportunity to clean up the yard some (while taking down xmas lights).
It was weird and I had the same thoughts you guys mention. It was foggy / damp and shirt weather.
Today it's just rain.
While working I thought I was lucky to get the stuff done before the real cold and snow comes, but I must be kidding myself.

78. Looking for silver linings
even though the price is high: at least the homeless aren't suffering with bitter cold and old folks will get a break on their heating costs.

WE had 60 degree temps Thursday and snow last night. Snow on the ground and the wind is fierce presently. Not sure about temps but I'd guestimate low 30's high 20's.

I worry about plants breaking dormancy too soon in this weirdness. We may have a lot of crop failures and bug problems if we don't get some good freezes this winter.

79. 50 nw of chicago here
in the 70's we had winter, over time the seasons have sorta
cold cold cold and snow snow snow
on occassion you would have a freak day of weather
ie: folks were in bahamas 72 for xmas and that xmas day
it was warmer in chicago, for that one day

over time there has been less snow, snow doesn't accumulate
as in the past, it doesn't get bitterly cold for periods of time

now we seem to have very mild winters periods' snows not accumulating,
it's not sticking around like it used too

but what strikes me the most are the geese, in the 70's the geese went south
for winter, so cool migrations are

now their here year round, i love having them but it's not right
them lakes s/b thoroughly frozen, with kids playing hockey on them, like i did
ski parks s/n/b making snow

maybe i'm nuts, but it certainly not what it once used to be, that's so sad

ps: spring too seems to span a smaller timeframe also, we go from winter--->summer

82. It's been like early Spring for days.
Now through 02:30 PM EST January 14, 2006
Widely scattered rain showers will continue across eastern New York and the Berkshires this afternoon. While the main area of precipitation has moved off to the east...a Second area of scattered showers will move in from the west. Rainfall accumulation through 2 PM will be a tenth of an inch or less. Winds will shift to the northwest and increase...with gusts to 25 mph this afternoon.

This Afternoon
Rain. Rain may be heavy at times. Highs around 50. Temperatures falling into the lower 40s this afternoon. North winds around 5 mph...becoming west this afternoon.

Tonight
Cloudy. Rain in the evening...then a chance of snow showers after midnight. Little or no snow accumulation. Much cooler with lows in the mid 20s. North winds 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

Yep ~ the weather is weird.

Weather is always changing from day to day here, but this has been an unusually warm and dry winter after an exceptionally dry fall. The fires around here have been brutal.

Let's see a longer than usual hurricane season, and this weird winter weather. Not to mention the polar bears suffering up north with ice floes melting on them....

85. Sort of perpetual Indian summer here in SC, not that I'm complaining
but it used to be cloudy and rainy all winter here. We've been having a lot of Chamber of Commerce type weather in recent winters, especially this one, which is very wonderful but appears to me to be another indicator of global warming. Or maybe the rains of past years just stuck with me more than the sunny days; I'm not the most reliable witness.

I'm right at the Texas/Arkansas border, and we had tornado warnings Thursday night.

I'm pretty much convinced we won't be getting much in the way of a real winter this year.

Its been in the 50s all week now its windy and rainy and should only get up into the upper 20s tomorrow. We had a thunderstorm earlier in the week and that is pretty much unheard of in these parts in January
