Corduroy pants.
Edited on Wed Nov-26-03 05:21 PM by oneighty
My earliest memory of "Cords" was the knickers I wore in the period just before the big war broke out with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. I was living down in Alabama then. I rode on the bus with a little Gypsy girl. She smelled of Concord grape candy. I was in love with my Gypsy girl and her candy. One day she took the candy from her mouth and gave it to me, my first kiss. Cords remind me of that.

A while later back up in Buffalo, NY I wore those same cord knickers to school where the other children were doing cursive. I was still printing. I was embarrassed about that. We kids my sister, Lois and Eunice and I were given a few coins for snack money. My favorite snack then was Egg Custard and Chocolate Milk. One day my coins fell thru a hole in my pocket and were trapped where my cord knickers blossomed out. I could not get to my money and missed out on my treats. Cords remind me of that.

In 1944 I was rented out to a farm. I was ten years old at that time. I worked like a slave on that farm all summer long. It was hard work for a little guy. I had to live there too. My bed was on the screened in front porch. Many nights I lay out there on my cot and cried myself to sleep. At the end of the summer my stepmother was given fifty dollars for my labour. She bought me two pairs of corduroy pants for the school year. That is all I got for that summer of child labor. Cords remind me of that.

Yesterday or the day before I bought a pair of cord pants. they are black, comfort fit, I think I might like them. They sure do remind me of other times. I am wearing them now.

Do you like Cords?

2. You got alot out of cordoury!
All I know of cordoruy is that they make swish, swish, swishing sounds if you are not bow legged. And I spent a fortune on a cobble cord sofa.

I loved your tale, I went there and saw that. Thanks for the story.

7. Love 'em
they are still 'groovy'. Sorry, bad pun.

Levis had an olive green/grey back years ago that i had (i think my first pair) that i've looked for since then, but have never found again in that color.

Got black, brown, tan, grey and dark green now, maybe a dark blue, i forget. I'm going to wear some tomorrow.
thanks for the reminder and the memory.
Happy T-day 180!

man she must have got around ;)

Seriously - that is one of the few things that I can say is better about today than it was before...that is one style (along with platform shoes) that I'm glad has made a comeback...

12. i love cords, but
i only like them when the band of material that goes around the waist, is oriented correctly. by that i mean, the wales should be vertical, not horizontal. i find that the pants are much more comfortable when the waistband is sewn that way. they have more "give" at the waist.

that's the way they used to be sewn. but nowadays all i can find are the other kind, with the wales running horizontally. i'm sure that in the old days, the seamstresses or whoever made the pants understood this point. but it seems to have been forgotten by today's clothing corporations.

18. I'm sorry, but men who go for the "Professor" look
with cords, turtleneck, and sportjacket with leather elbow pads, might want to join "the now", as it were.

That being said, I think a pair of flat-fronted (no pleats for me, thank you very much),straight leg, relaxed fit, thin wale cords is a good looking pair of pants.

20. Cords are all the rage in NYC fashion now
All kinds of colors, mostly red, dark brown, and green. Quite fashionable to wear them in the City, if you're down with that look.

21. They DON'T go "swish, swish".
They go "swoosh, swoosh".
And yes, I had a pair of corduroy knickers too.

28. oh yeah, loved those levi's cords
from back in the 60's/70's. i had just about every color - light blue, dark blue, chocolate brown, tan. this was in southern california, and everyone wore them with the obligatory hang ten tee shirt.
