My pumpkin pie turned into poo!
I worked on the crust for an hour ... it's like cardboard now. My apple pie turn out better.. But I'm so bummed! I tried so hard and now I have to give it to the dog.
BTW, is it ok to give pumpkin to a dog?

2. I baked paper into my pecan pie 2 years ago.
You know how those prepared crusts have waxed paper in them to separate the crusts? Well, I didn't, and baked a pecan pie with it right there. Oh well.

I once broiled a cake, too.

and this year, my oven broke (as of today). That's prolly a good thing.

29. well, it wasn't really my fault.
I was borrowing a friend's oven, since the bday girl lived with me and I wanted the cake to be a surprise. My neighbor's oven was backwards from mine. I thought I put it on bake. Whoops!

10. I consider myself a very experienced
cook, but I cannot for the life of me make a pie crust. Get the pillsbury pre-made and add the filling....You can funk out the crust to make it look homemade. Mine is in the oven right now...And no...don't give it to the dog...I posted earlier that I feel I should change my sig line about what not to give to dogs....I have cleaned up so much poop in my life..when in doubt, leave it out..(of the dog dish) :)

12. Buy the pre made pie crusts
Edited on Wed Nov-26-03 07:45 PM by corarose
Everyone in the industry uses them except for a few people. The reason that your pie crust might have turned out that way is because you worked on it too long.

Was your oven hot enough when you baked your pie?

Put your pie back into the oven and bake it a little longer If you haven't cut it yet.

13. Well,
I think I did work it a little too long. I'm pretty sure the oven was hot enough.. I had it on 350 and it was done. The crust was like a cracker :) and yeah I cut it because I knew it was toast. The filling was good though :) Now no pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving :(

18. Make something new out of it.
Edited on Wed Nov-26-03 08:23 PM by corarose
This will work.

Do you have any graham crackers in the house or a graham cracker crust. I always keep a few on hand.

Do you have a container of cool whip?

You are going to have your pie.

Take the cool whip and mix it in with the chilled pooled pie filling. Put it in a graham cracker crust and wallah you have a pie.
Chill it first and it may take 1 1/2 containers of cool whip if you have a large pie. Chill it a few hours and I can guarantee you that it will work.

27. Do you want to make a special quick pie
Do you have 2 containers of FRUIT yogurt, cool whip and a graham cracker pie crust in the house?

Mix the cool whip with the yogurt and put it in the graham cracker pie crust and refrigerate it for 4 hours or until set. It's good and it is a diet delight.

16. seriously
don't feed it to the dog. Their digestive tracts were not designed for sugar and dough and butter. Anyway, you'd be sure it was wrong when fido lets one. wheeeeeeeeeooooo!

17. Yeah, you probably don't want to do that.
Vets will suggest you give both dogs and cats pumpkin to make them 'regular' when they're constipated. If the dog's already regular, I don't want to imagine what feeding it pie filling would do!

15. Butter makes the best pie crust. I mean the things laden with
calories anyway, so what the heck...add a few more. Since I switched to butter pie crusts are nice, flaky, and actually tasty. I feel your pain though. I have baked many a casserole dish filled with just the apple filling because the damned crust didn't turn out. :(

Hugs, Laura

19. I'm Not A Cook
But someone told me the butter in the dough shouldn't get warm until you're ready to cook it. The dough should be kept refrigerated in the meantime.

20. I mix fill and cook...unless I am being really on, and make it ahead
(which rarely happens) then I might chill it. It always works for me. Grandma taught me. :)

Unless it wasn't chilled in the first place.

23. The secret to a good pie crust is to not
work the dough to much, mix with a fork til all the all the ingredients are crumbly then pat into ball and roll out. the less time spent the better.

26. Pumpkin is good for the pooch
It is a good source of "filler" when a chubby puppy needs to cut the calories. Just mix some in with the (reduced portion of) dry food.

I know that is not the point of your post, but I thought I would share anyway.

:-)

31. Lotsa pie crust drama today
The girlfriends and I were just griping about our pie crusts for the last hour, everyone seemed to have problems this year.

I put a tablespoon of vinegar in my shortening crusts to make them nice and flaky, been making em that way since I was a little girl. Today though, I swear, the crust could not get enough flour, I had to add almost a cup more then I normally do. Last time I use tap water in my crusts.

The humid air did not help either. What normally takes me 15 minutes ended up taking two hours and it isnt nearly as good as normal. Infact, I made two of my pies with premade crusts because I just couldnt handle any more baking stress.

As for my pumpkin pie, I had to bake it for an additional 20 minutes. I have no idea why.

Next year, Im trying this no bake pumpking pie recipe:
http://pie.allrecipes.com/az/DoubleLayerPumpkinPie.asp

Atleast my pecan pie turned out perfectly.
