The Resurrection of He, She or It! |
|
Only three days ago the mystery plant seemed on the way out. I helped a little bit by moving it to the back door, next stop out in the cold goes the plant. I liked the handsome plant. He, she or it came here as a little sprout about five years ago. Ms. 180 (Tricia) moved him into a bigger pot last spring and it be down hill ever since. I move he, she or it upstairs with me so I can keep a close eye on he/she/it. Alas! To no avail, he/she or it continues the down hill slide to plant heaven.
The plant is sitting by the back door by me and my computer I can hear a voice in my head crying out "Help me, help me." I realize it is he/she or it crying out to me. One last try I think. I pluck off all the dead leaves (A whole bunch) only a few almost green leaves are left. I massage the remaining leaves gently, I lean close, blow upon them my carbon dioxide laden exhalations, sort of a mouth to leaf thing. Out in the shed I locate some plant food for acid loving plants. I mix up a batch in an old window washing fluid bottle with the pump spray device. I carefully spray each and every leaf and the stems supporting them. Over night he, she or it showed great improvement. So during the day I set he, she or it in the sun shine in the entrance way to my quarters. By night I bring he,she or it in for warmth, spray some more food on. He, she or it is growing big and strong now. Darn I feel good! Kind of a God feeling!

1. You can start by not moving the poor thing! |

One of the main things plants want is consistent lighting and heat. Changing either of those can send a plant into stress that can be seen in it's leaves for up to 4-6 weeks AFTER the initial stress.
It sounds like you don't know what kind of plant you have, so you have no idea what kind of lighting/soil/watering conditions you need. Put a Yucca in a low-light situation and watch it do poorly, put a Dracaena 'Janet Craig' in full sun and watch the leaves turn yellow, move a Ficus benjamina around a house like you've been doing and watch it drop every leave it has.
If you'd like, send me a picture of the wee plant and I can I.D. it for you and let you know how you should be caring for it. I can also give you full-proof instructions on how to water a plant -- yes, there IS a proper way to do it.
BTW, if it looked better over night, it wasn't the plant food, it was the watering you gave it. And the love. :)
Another BTW, the leaf drop you are seeing is most like from watering and/or light problems. Don't be surprises if it continues for a few weeks.
I am happy to hear "it" is doing better, though. :hi:

I have no idea what type of plant it is and cannot send a picture. That which you say makes a lot of sense. My room has no windows. The entrance way is unheated, but never freezes, gets plenty of winter sun. I would like to keep it there? How about if I use an (ultra violet?) light on it? I do believe it was watered to much.
Thanks Hell Hath No Fury!
