I'm currently living and teaching in Japan. My mom called this morning. They're going to see the relatives tomorrow, and she asked me to e-mail what I want for X-Mas and my birthday (which is a few days before). I'm basically clueless, given that overseas shipping is an expensive hassle. Also many of the things I might ask for (a microwave, computer gear) are already available over here. The electronics in particular are far better than anything in the states. I have a lot of interests that include computers, music, all things political, epic fantasy novels, the outdoors. Any suggestions? The only thing I've been able to think of so far is amazon.com e-mail gift certificates, but I feel cheesy just asking for gift certs and money, especially from my parents.

I already told the relatives I don't want any actual gifts this xmas. Instead, I'd like them to take the money they would have spent and either donate it to a nice democratic/anti-B*sh cause or give me the money so I can donate it. I'd rather have a new president than a new shirt. :-)
