30. Years ago, when I was into my hunting phase... |
|
I was in Upstate NY wild turkey hunting. This is something I will not try again. I thought I had a bead on one, and the damn thing flew in every direction but straight! I squeezed the trigger, and the bird laughed at me as it flew away. I bought a fresh killed turkey, and asked the butcher if they sold many of these during this time of year, he said they sold well over 100 to those of us that can't shoot worth a damn.
Besides, I didn't want to spit out buckshot with each bite anyway.

When I was in high school a particularly spoiled friend of mine called me on Thanksgiving Eve and asked what I was doing. I told her I was helping my Mom stuff the turkey. She wanted to know how that was done. So I told her we had it tied to the kitchen table and were force feeding it . She believed me. It's been 50 years, but, I have a feeling she's a Republican.

10. We have lots of wild turkey in So Maine and they can fly. |
|
The things we breed to eat are a sorry lot. And like all animals to be killed are treated in just an awful way. Course it is not a shock, look what we do to people.I do hope we will not all have to state our case at the Pearly Gates as no one will get in.

the conditions they are raised in are deplorable.
And, after one has tasted wild turkey, one will never again want one of those tasteless things anyway.

My wife and I had a house in QUarryville, PA for a few years. It was in the country surrounded by Amish Farmers (my wife is a Dairy Herd Specialist) Anyhooo... One day i heard this racket in the back yard and couldn't see anything, Then all of a sudden this Humongous Flying Bowling Ball came out of a large tree near the back of our property. I swear it was so big i thought it was a Condor. Yes they can fly, but like Toonces (and how he drives a car) just not very well.

I'm not singling you out, Farafield (and :hi: welcome to DU!), this is for everyone, but it's quite apparent that a) I know that wild turkeys can fly (we had them on our property and we killed them and ate them, though that part wasn't apparent), and b) it's not what I'm talking about anyway.
Just a gentle reminder to people to read the whole thread before posting.
Thank you. You may all go back to your regular business.
And yes, being surprised by a turkey can be a godawful experience! We had a lot of them - a whole, what? gaggle? - on our property, and I was surprised a couple times by one or two of them. At other times, the darn things would all roost in the trees across from our living room, and YELL YELL YELL for extended periods of time. Very noisy, that. :-)

but where I live, they just do a *walkabout*. There's nothing quite as hilarious as watching them walk along sidewalks, apparently obeying traffic signs and somehow mananging to live to make us laugh another Thanksgivng Day. I've had them walk disdainfully through my garden- (I have no apple tree) - and come right up my front stairs to cackle their discontent. What's not to love aboout a pushy turkey?

28. I was talking about this scene yesterday and felt so old |
|
I went back to school about 6 months ago to get another degree (in nursing). While there are surprisely many returning adult students, they're are a lot of young'uns (I'm only 31 btw). Someone said something about turkeys flying and I talked about this whole WKRP episode and all I got was blank stares and a few "that was before my time" statements- man, oh man, don't people know their classics anymore?

29. What!? They run that episode a lot on Nick at Night |
|
I love that show, but then again, I'm only 24, but I watched the re-runs as a kid (yeah, it was still in syndication back then.) Fantastic show, great comic timing, unique characters, but successful comedys are rare...
Of course my dad really likes WKRP, so I kinda had to watch it too, but I really appreciate the quality of that program.
And Bailey was Hot!
