Poll question: How do you spell the red condiment?
The mustard poll made me think about this.

6. It's KETCHUP, dammit, NOT catsup!
I don't know who started that "catsup" abomination, but it's wrong.

The name came from a Malaysian fish sauce pronounced "ketsap," and the English sailors brought the name home with them, though it wasn't for a fish sauce once they got back.

Hey, did youknow that in the 1700s and 1800s, ketchup in America was made from mushrooms, not tomatoes? Truth. Look at someold cookbooks, and you'll see.

11. Dammit, good Democrats from California still call it Catsup
For a brief period in 1981, the Reagan administration decreed that ketchup could be considered a vegetable for the purpose of satisfying nutritional requirements for school lunches. Because the government’s edict used the spelling “ketchup,” Del Monte (brand name developed by California Fruit Canners Association) found itself unable to sell its Catsup to schools, and quickly changed its spelling. Although public outcry soon resulted in ketchup’s removal from the vegetable list, Del Monte kept its new spelling. That appears to have settled the question of spelling once and for all, while leaving unresolved the puzzle of why ketchup wasn’t considered a fruit. But it could have been worse: if ketchup had maintained its original formula, it might now be considered a meat.

13. Holy crap, I never heard that story before. It's funny. I mean, I had
known about the "ketchup as a vegetable" business, but never heard the Del Monte story.

Hey, at least it got them to spell the stuff right!

7. Wait! There's more.
Henry J. Heinz began making ketchup in 1876. His recipe remains the same to this day. It became so popular that other manufacturers rushed to catch up to the ketchup craze. (Catchup to catsup might have been the slogan of the day.) Soon Ketchup, Catsup, Catchup, Ketsup, Catsip, Cotsup, Kotchup, Kitsip, Catsoup, Katshoup, Katsock, cackchop, Cornchop, Cotpock, Kotpock, Kutpuck, Kutchpack and Catchpuck were all available for sale. All were tomato-based and vied to become a household word (or at least a confusing option among many others). Only three major brands survived: Heinz Ketchup, DelMonte Catsup and Hunt’s, who could not make up their mind and bottled under the names Hunt’s Catsup (east of the Mississippi), Hunt’s Ketchup (west of that same river) and Hunt’s Cornchops in Iowa only.
