I just got accepted to the University of my choice! |
|
I applied to Dominican Univerity to study pre-Library and Information Science and got accepted. This is after being turned down by a handful of other schools in the past two years....I'll be going in as a transfer student starting Fall of this year. Yay!
I hope to go there to get my MLA, too. It's the only school in the Chicago area with a pre-Library program.
Now all I have to do is, uh, apply for scholarships and loans. Wah!

I'm gonna NEED a librarian just to collate all my bills.
At least it's better than being a cook, though.

My son just got 4 years of tuition to any MA state college or university... it's a John & Abigail Adams scholarship. I feel like I won the lottery!

7. It's a Massachusetts scholarship |
|
It is for performance on the standardized test known as the MCAS, which I believe is only administered here in MA.

It's about a 45 minute drive everyday. But it's SOOOOO worth it.
I dig Oak Park, though. The Frank Lloyd Wright houses in the area are just extraordinarily beautiful.

Congratulations and don't sweat the money part too much. (ugh!) You're young, you have years to pay it back! :-) Plus, if you get a library job with the city or state, the money's not bad, the benefits are great and life in the library is tranquil and full of good things to read.

16. Well, I'm 31 in a few weeks. |
|
So..."young?" Compared to Rose Kennedy, sure.
I was a dumbass and dropped out of college after three years in the 90's. I've been working in food service ever since and I NEED an escape. It's too stressful and I'm not a "foodie."
Not looking forward to paying off debt, but I hope it'll be a vertical move, career-wise. Especially in Chicago, where we have a vital and thriving Public Library system.

My parents were both librarians. I grew up in that environment. I originally went to school to study music, then made a transition to English and journalism. When I dropped out, I hoped to get back into journalism, but it's such am inconsistent and fickle career. Library work may pay less, but it's stable and quiet, which is what I need.
Good luck with getting your MLA!

THere are a few schools all over the country that offer one. I lucked out in finding one in the Chicago area. Hopefully, once I get my Bachelor's, I can work for a while and save up some bucks to advance to the Master's program.

Once I did my five years of undergrad I just wanted to get out - anywhich way I could. Part of that was that I hated Twin-town. Same with graduate school, which I only went to because I could not find a job, any job. I enjoy school in theory, but I really wanted to get out and start my life. Also, the reality of school did not live up to the theory. Especially in graduate school you don't get to cut classes any more.

I will confess that I must join the ranks of thoise who were unaware of the pre-library program--anywhere!
I have two cousins with Master's in Library Science (not sure of the particular acronym) it seems to be working for them! :D

44. It's usually MLS (I made a typo in the OP), but |
|
Dominican's undergrad program is called Pre-Library and Information Science, and their Masters' acronym is MLIS.
Contrary to the news that Libraries across the country are in trouble, there are THRIVING libraries here in Chicago, and many others in the US are adapting to technological advances. Congrats to your cousins! I hope I can join their ranks!

I had a friend doing MLS (in Oklahoma), and she really enjoyed it. Also (though this may not be too important given your assessment of the city's library system), the MLS degree is actually a lot more versatile, I think, than most people give it credit for.
Anyway, congrats and good luck!
