3. Thx for responding (SHAME to all you who posted 6 or 7 and didn't explain!
Of course, you're slightly more pessimistic than me... but you're right. The way our country is doing things and using things, we've got 50 years left. Tops.

19. Yep
It'll have to be aliens, a super-lethal pandemic, or an asteroid to get people together, unfortunately.

4. I must be a cynic
as I believe world peace will never happen. There will always be some jerk who decides to attack another nation.

Even if everyone had enough to eat, money, comfortable homes and the like, there would always be the idiot who wanted more and was willing to fight for more than his/her fair share.

5. Given how our society is currently set, that is inevitable. But crime...
Edited on Thu Nov-27-03 11:13 PM by HypnoToad
...will always exist. Why do we let the bad criminals run free forever and the minor criminals rot in prison forever?

(on edit: I'm not attacking you. I'm speaking about what we all, as a society, must do, to ensure a long, worthwhile future for our civilization...)

But if people really wanted a better society, like the ones they romanticize about in theatre, they'd work toward it.

We need to make a society that makes the acquisiton of wealth a sin. Indeed, greed (amongst other types of powerplays) is a big sin in the Bible... but that part is quietly overlooked in churches attended by corporate CEOs...

We need to make a society where all people are considered, who can be used without being exploited. To enrich both themselves and the society they/we live in.

We need to make all people feel welcomed. Not stressed out.

Is this really impossible?! We all know "money is the root of all evil", so why do we tolerate it? We're humans, we're supposed to be intelligent, surely we can come up and agree to a new system and stick with it. Yes, our generation will have the most difficult time in adapting. But future generations might even appreciate us for making the sacrifice. As it stands, future generations would probably want to time travel so they can brutally torture the idiots who are putting them into a very bad situation (no oil, a gigantic deficit, worldwide chaos and mayhem, and shortages of other supplies because our continually increasing demand is just not sustainable?)

Instead of putting drug users away, why not the greedy, already-affluent scum instead? I mean, in this country, people get as little as 30 days for manslaughter. Get caught making an 'unauthorized copy' of a movie? Well, that's 5 years in the slammer and a fine that people would never be able to pay off. That's bullshit. Our country's morals and priorities are, fuck it, not even there!!!!! Last I heard, they want to make penalties for downloading a music song to be extremely severe as well. And where the hell is Ken Lay, amongst others? Free as a flock of dirty birds. x( Sorry, but America is the pinnacle of fucked-upness and I will NOT be silent anymore.

We can either change things now and make life more tolerable for our upcoming generations, or life's gonna change it for us - and life ain't as compassionate; life makes bush* look compassionate by comparison.

If we care about our future generations, we change now. All of us. Period. Otherwise it's nothing more hypocritical than lip service.

As things stand in this world, I'm damn proud not to have been selfish enough to create a new life in a world which is going to becom very, very bad by the time they reach 40, 30, or heaven forbid, even younger.

Life is what we make of it. Let's make it worth living. (that's also why I won't leave "charities" who discriminate alone. They claim to be humanitarian, but they lose that status the attosecond they discriminate against another human being.)

9. I don't think that is cynical...
just a very accurate assessment of the times. I mean... even if peace does occur... at this rate... our species is doomed. Just look at the increase in cases as Asthma over the year... we are sending the very globe that all life lives on down the tube.

Wow. I can see why people like to be uninformed!

10. 1, 2, and 4
The first two are for survival and 4 is about fairness. Treat white-collar criminals just like blue collar ones. The gov. just tries to sweep white collar crime under the rug. Unless the damage is so great that they can't ignore it.

11. Don't jump down my throat, but a long term breeding program to weed out
competitiveness and xenophobia and encourage cooperation, inclusiveness and group survival over individual survival.

Basically, I'm talking about "domesticating" the human race.

Most of our problems can trace back to competitiveness and greed - "I" need more money, resources, sexual partners, influence, power, etc than "him". These were highly useful instincts when there were 1 or 2 million of us on the planet but once we hit 3 billion, boy were those a bad idea!

We might be able to do most of the above with an environmental program (nurture) rather than a genetic (nature) program, but I'm not sure of it. We know we can domesticate species - we've done it for 4 thousand years.

Population control wouldn't hurt - 2 kids per couple, or one per individual. So a woman who marries twice can have 3 kids, provided that her 1st husband never remarries and has more than one child.

Consumption regulations wouldn't hurt - no one can have more than X amount of materials annually. Sure there would be a black market, but if the production is limited, then that black market is limited to surplus.

We humans are acquisistive as magpies, as vicious as hyenas and as greedy as a squirrel.

Politicat (who does not have a good opinion of people at the moment.)

16. OK ... I'll take a shot ...
no shame here ... i voted for "other" ...

nothing like asking one of the great macro questions, eh? why not ask "how can we fix everything?" ...

but, since you asked, here's my read ...

human beings have a fairly simple hierarchy of needs ... we are designed to protect ourselves ... the simple basics are food, clothing and shelter ... but it goes much deeper than this ... we have a need to feel loved ... a need to feel a sense of empowerment ... a need to shape the world around us ...

someone above mentioned competitiveness and greed ... i'd say we are competitive only because we are greedy ...

so, that deals with the "pool of raw materials" from which our "leaders" come ... not a very pretty picture ... but it gets much, much worse ... because those who seek power and control often are more disposed to the use of power rather than the use of cooperation ... we hand them the very largest club to wield and they are no longer constrained by the equities of their peer groups ... absolute power corrupts absolutely ...

to achieve world peace, i see only two possibilities ... either we start teaching a better morality, something that capitalism and its inherent valuing of the fittest over the weakest can never teach, or we are doomed ... that nations fail, and that the global community fails, is no surprise ... it is the only possible consequence of promoting human fallibilities into positions of power ... if we don't start building better citizens, there's no hope of having better leaders ...

oh, and the other possible way to achieve global harmony? wait until humans no longer survive on the planet ... maybe we just need to give the insects a chance ...

20. The next installment of the fall of civilization
At least one, perhaps several, disasters happened in the past when the world had developed advanced technology. Many old cultures tell legends about these event(s). People of many cultures are waiting for this event to happen soon. The Christian version of this, of course, is the battle of Armeggedon. I understand that there is a Mayan version and an East Asian version of this as well. Most of the world will be destroyed. We will abadon technology and live peacably with our fellow survivors and pershaps learn our lesson for a few generations.
