2. I like Lily Tomlin's take on it.
Remember when Ernestine used to call and badger "Jedgar Hoover." "There's nothing like a Hoover when you're dealing with dirt."

4. Not really.
It was named after W.H. Hoover who bought the patent from the inventor:

Perhaps you heard it was named after J. Edgar Hoover, head of the FBI. You can read his official FBI file here:

http://foia.fbi.gov/hoover.htm

His homosexuality was not generally know until after his death, but the Mafia knew and used it to blackmail him into not busting them.

6. Well, I liked Sean Reynolds version better, that "Hoover sucked"
Sluggish sales were given a kick by Hoover’s 10 day, free home trial, and eventually there was a Hoover® vacuum cleaner in nearly every home.

Such a sales gimmick wouldn't work today. Thanks for the link. Fascinating how this contraption was invented.

7. a guy I knew in junior high was nicknamed "hoover"
He once stuck his dick in a vaccum...yes I'll admit I let the world know, and came up with the nickname!

8. No, but other things did...
for example, "Hoovervilles", the shantytowns and cardboard boxes in which huddled the millions of unemployed. Or "Hoover Blankets", newspapers which unemployed men slept under.
