Ahhh California living....
This morning I checked out the new "Club Sport" on a free pass.

While there I did my lap swimming in a heated olympic sized pool. It was outside, the sky was a glorious azure and the sun was out. Palm trees stood in the background. If someone didn't know better, they would say it was spring with a perfect sixty-something weather outside.

As I swam my laps, I realized that many DU'ers in places like Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan might kill for what I was getting there. And that we Californians take this for granted....

Anyway, thought I'd share...

1. It was as warm here in Maryland yesterday as Los Angeles
Mid 60s.

Of course, the temp dropped 20 degrees in the late afternoon.

2. You have that extra glow today because
yesterday was raw and gray after the weather people had promised us "partly cloudy." I was in Pleasanton for lunch(cool, gray)and Castro Valley in the pm (cool, gray, occasional small patch of blue way off in the distance.)

Today is a very nice winter day, I agree.:hi:

3. Pffft!
What are azure skies and palm trees when you can have sweet wet air and the smell of pine from the rocking chair on your front porch?

:P

9. Which state?
Taverner is in northern California and has azure skies and palm trees. I'm in central Alabama and was in the rocking chair I metioned, smelling the pine and enjoying the warm sweet air of the South just a couple of hours ago!

:)

12. California
I'm not sure where there are healthy palm trees in NoCal. The ones planted in San Francisco a few years back are barely making it. North of Sonoma County we get pine.

Or Pinecrest area...hell anywhere in the Northern Sierras gives good pine, as well as sequoia trees...

California.

Hell, more than half of us are from someplace else!!

You can have your snow, cold, slush, shovels and all the rest of that shit. I'll happily stay out here with all of the plastic people.

Especially BMW and Hummer drivers.

I drive a BMW, and am first to admit how snotty and rude our kind can be. *duck*

Either that, or I hop in to my junk neocon-spec Ford and get treated like dirt by those BMW drivers.

(Two cars just for my use - another SoCal thing.)

23. I love the DU Californians I know.
You, NSMA, Zomby (although he's a transplant), Nini, and so many others. And there have been a couple of Mississippians who have been utter assholes on DU--a couple of 'em who aren't with us anymore, but I won't mention names.

We have snooty jerks here, trust me. You've just been fortunate that the DU southerners you've encountered are nice folks. Most of the time. :D

27. I love this state
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 10:45 AM by nothingshocksmeanymo
You've got every possible climate you want. If you want snow you have it. If you want desert you have it. If you want country, you have it. If you want a college town, Santa Cruz beats every other or Berkeley if you want something bit more off the beaten path.

The mountains meet the ocean as they only can on the west coast of the US.

AS for comments about phony people, I've met more here at DU than I have in my state of 36 million people.
Yes, it costs more but at least it goes into property that appreciates and not into thin air heating one's home.
Taxes are a bit higher but so are wages. Being the fifth largest economy in the world has its benefits.

There's much more to life than miserable humid heat and bone breaking cold.

You could snow ski and swim in the ocean on the same day..in fact, it is warm enough to do so today.

I'll keep California. I've been to all 50 states and never found a reason to actually live in another save for Hawaii.

I've been tempted to move over to Oregon, just because I love it over there so much...but try finding a job. Even in Portland, its tough.

Here? If I got fired I could find a new job in a week. And that's even if I poured hot coffee down my boss' shirt...

28. Well, you can keep the mudslides, earthquakes, and wildfires, though
Here in Michigan those are few and far between...or never. But I like the mountains, or what I could see of them through the haze when I stayed in Century City last summer.

Wouldn't trade Michigan's Upper Peninsula for anything, though.

29. Ok, the mudslides and wildfires
really only affect people who built houses where they shouldn't be in the first place. If ya build your house on the side of a hill, it might slide down it. Simple enough. If you build your house in a mountainous valley surrounded by scrub, it might burn. Deal with it.

The earthquakes...well, there are very few places in this country that don't come with a tendency toward some sort of natural disaster. That happens to be ours.

Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 01:11 PM by nothingshocksmeanymo
If you want to compare peninsulas, then let's compare Monterrey to anywhere in the US, let alone a college town in the middle of farmland..if you want to compare metropolises....fine...let's compare Los Angeles to...say...an economically depressed metropolis such as Detroit.

Either way...less people wanting to be in California is a good thing :) I'll take an earthquake every ten years over 8 months of cold anyday..it's not quite 10 AM ...january 24 and it's 71 degrees

36. Earthquakes happen a lot more often than every ten years!
I experienced multiple 5+ quakes in the Los Angeles area in a single year. My biggest complaint about LA is the cost of living. I know many who can't afford to buy a home.

My comparison of LA to Detroit is that Detroit has all the problems LA has, and none of the attractions.

And, a true Californian doesn't trust any air he can't see, any land that doesn't move, and any tree that doesn't burn.

I called home (PA) Christmas day the one year. I told them it was 75 degrees outside. I was called a jerk by my niece for my trouble. I heard her through the phone. I asked my sister to put her on the phone. I proceeded to tell her that it's Aunt Jerk to her.
