I've come to a conclusion about technology: |
|
It's evil and it allows evil entities to thrive. http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103_2-5111637.html Radio frequency identification tags aren't just for pallets of goods in supermarkets anymore. http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104_2-5111932.html After swerving off the road a few times, Microsoft is gearing up for another try at the automotive market. http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104_2-5111993.html The software that sits between the operating system and a PC's hardware hasn't changed much in decades. Now, Phoenix Technologies wants to introduce greater security, usability and copy protection.

1. The evil is in laws, not in devices. |
|
All this evil you mention would be nearly harmless if technological countermeasures against it weren't declared illegal (Google DMCA)
Also, poeople are trying to make these Orwellian devices mandatory. (Google CBDTPA). Again, the real evil is in the laws.

2. Technology is a blackboard |
|
You can write evil things on it, or write good on it. The board itself is not inherently evil or good. It's what we DO with it that brings about good or bad results.

4. Technologists are funny people. |
|
Sorta like the "better living thru chemistry" people back in the 50's and 60's or the "atomic energy will fix everything" folks of the 30's and 40's.
I have a friend who will be first in line for that RFID tag. He wants to get a socket and a head full of tech like the folks in Neuromancer. He is firmly convinced that technology will cure *all the worlds ills*.
Amazing how deliberately blind some folks can be.
IIRC, even Wm. Gibson addressed this in one of his books... or someone similar... workers had to check out their computer equipment from a locked cage with security guards. Everything was carefully secured and scrutinized. All comp time was logged and monitored. And I suspect this is where it is all heading. We are watching the Wild West of information tech pass us by, folks. 40 years from now we'll be reminiscing about the "free flow" of information.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

6. But it will *solve the worlds problems*... their marketing lit says so! |
|
lol
I'm not anti-technology... I'm as gee-whiz as the next guy. But the application of technology is the problem. Screw RFID tags, wear an RF jammer.
Just wait until nano-tech becomes the norm and they can spray you with a near undetectable mist of RFID tags that migrate to just under your skin.
All in the name of keeping cost down, or terrorist attacks or something meaningful sounding.
