Gateway update
Some of you have read about my problems with Gateway, in that they lost a laptop I had shipped off for repair -- Gateway had, in fact, given me the wrong address to ship the laptop to. It arrived at Sioux Falls (it's supposed to have gone to Irving, TX) on Oct. 30, and since then no one can find the laptop.

As the days turned into weeks I was getting pretty pissed off. Since no one at Gateway was returning my e-mails or phone calls, I decided to send off an e-mail to Gateway's #1 man, Ted Waitt. If you've seen a Gateway commercial, Ted's the one that talking with a cow in a number of spots.

But here's the amazing thing: Ted Waitt actually read the letter and handed it off to one of his people to help find it! I thought that was pretty amazing.

However, I'm not expecting it to be found -- I think someone stole it. Unfortunately, UPS insurance doesn't cover it in that situation. Once the package is delivered and signed for, the insurance ends.

1. If it was signed for and delivered at the address Gateway gave you,
it's their problem now. They damn well better either find that laptop and make it good as gold or send you a new one on their dime.

Best of luck to you. I'm sure losing something like that has to be highly annoying, to say the least.

2. Ted built that company.
It's his baby and he is damn protective of it. It is not surprising that he would give your situation his personal attention.

You can bet that it will also be reviewed, with an eye towards changing procedures. Ted is that kind of guy.

3. i'd say stay loud
stay in their face, don't let them drop it. keep a list of the names of the reps you talk to, keep them on their toes. keep all of your documents in a folder, make sure you keep the shipping documents. I would never let them drop this issue for as long as i lived. I would even threaten to sue them for violation of contract - as they have an express contract with you.

4. In an unbelievable turn of events
Gateway admitted to losing my laptop and are going to send me, as a replacement, one of their top-of-the-line models! If you're a computer geek you will drool over this computer. Here's a link to it:

17-inch screen!
Mobility Radeon 9600! (this is my ticket to Half-Life 2 and Doom 3)
512 MBs RAM
DVD BURNER/CD-Burner combo drive!
Firewire and USB 2.0 ports!
Built-in wireless!

Holy crap!

Congratulations - I hope the data wasn't that important...

On Edit: From what I've seen of the source, HL2 won't be around for quite some time. If the leaked source is indeed the most current build, then was the "soon" release date BS. That stuff is not even in calling distance of completed.

6. Some of it was
I'm pretty sure someone walked off with my old notebook. If they salvage the parts and get the hard drive into another system, I may be screwed because of certain information that's on the drive, such as all of my e-mail. I'm not sure what else I had stored -- I know I had a mirror of my web site. Probably some personal info. Hopefully if the thief is smart they'll just wipe out the hard drive.
