I'm So Fucking SICK Of White Men Politicians With Southern Accents On TV
Edited on Tue Jan-24-06 07:50 PM by matcom
sorry southern DUers. no disrespect meant BUT i'm fucking tired as HELL of this. they (repukes) ALL seem to have that 'drawl' and in MANY cases it is contrived and NOT EVEN REAL! They do it for 'effect' and think it helps them 'resonate' with the 'common man'. That SHOULD be an insult to you. It is to me.

i don't hate it in INTELLIGENT people but this is what the repukes have become. Southern over-enunciated accents a.k.a. Jerry Falwell style.

i'm tired of it.

if you think i'm dissing you i'll grab the  . if you can see past the SURFACE of this post and understand the TRUE meaning, i'll give you a

flame away

IRL, though I was born here, I don't have much of a twang either.

The only person who sounds the same to me, on a stage or in private conversation, is Jesse Helms.

Even with the sound turned off, they annoy me.

And there's nothing more surreal than a group of white male senators grilling another white male about his stand on abortion.

Seeing crap like that makes me want to throw things at the TV. That picture of Dumbya signing that third trimester anti-abortion bill, will all the white men standing behind him, just enrages me. I made a choice years ago to not have any more children, but I still don't want Roe v. Wade overturned.

I don't have even a hint of a drawl or an accent.

They make that shit up. It makes them sound folksy. Bush didn't have an accent in the 80s. Where the fuck did that come from?

9. I'm conflicted
part of me understand what you are saying. It has a certain "aura" that is unpleasant.

On the other hand, I mentally substitute "black men speaking jive" for "white men politicians with southern accents" and I gotta say it is a racist statement. And I've heard people make that statement.

However, I have been known to be politically incorrect myself. So I won't flame you for it.

16. ohmigod-quoted what #9 said below
substitute "black men speaking jive" for "white men politicians with southern accents"
I happen to be black (light skinned) and trust me that is truly not a reflexive statement.
"Jive" connotates a lot more. Try "cracker" on for size.

41. so the parallel
would be black men speaker jive = white men speaking like crackers?

I'll go with that. I thought a long time before using "jive." First, I think it's outdated, but Eubonics seemed over the top.

Anyway, I failed logic in high school so equalizing statements doesn't come easily. But it was a racist comment. I just can't think of a parallel.

Except how about "a bunch of Hispanic men with accents?"

However, I repeat my caveat. I am no saint when it comes to such comments. I just like to point them out here because we pride ourselves on NOT stereotyping people according to their color or culture.

61. Same here
The thing I really can't stomach is when Shrub says, "Whut the 'Merkin people gotta unnerstand is <insert condescending jinogistic bullshit here>." He pulls that shit all the time, usually when he's confronted about something like the Plame leak, the fact that there are no WMDs in Iraq, the Katrina clusterfuck, his domestic spying program, you name it. :grr:

And I've been back in the South for the last two-and-a-half years after eight years away, and lived here for 13 years before that, from right before I turned 14 to right after I turned 27. No trace of a Southern accent. Bush's phony-baloney cornpone accent is as fake as the day is long--but DUers already know that. ;)

I've been up to my eyes in numbers all day long. I can't get 280.35 out of my head. It's D and it's R in a vector diagram. I have no other sides, yet I am supposed to find the angle. Hahahhaa. Seriously, I'm losing my mind. I'm halfway to insanity and almost halfway to finishing my Computer Engineering program at community college. Does this mean I will go nuts BEFORE I finish?

Oh yeah, and I agree with you about the southern thing to a point. I mean the only southerners they allow on television are idiots, morans (sic on purpose), and repukes. Except for James Carville, I think all southerners on television are repukes, aren't they?

It's just that Bobby recruits so well in many rather crime-ridden areas! (most of Florida, actually)

He's a scream; you should see his post-game show on Sundays. They watch the game film and he says very little about the players, it is all "and I saw his Mama at the game, and she is so proud of him...."

I'll say this: they do throw them off the team, regardless. But dad gum it, there shure are a lot of 'em!

Have you ever seen Doke Campbell Stadium? It looks like a freaking palace. Literally a huge castle. However, to their credit, the castle is also admin. offices, classrooms, restaurants, etc. But it is rather embarassing.

I work near the Ted's Montana Grill where he has a penthouse above the offices so every once in a while, we'll go to lunch there. I saw him in there one day at a table full of executives and he was just talking away with his mouth full. Eww.

I know what you mean about her though. I saw a show just the other day where she was talking to her two sons and have a mouthful of something.

Since I have home state advantage, I will criticize her for it. No one else has permission - it's in our state constitution (well, probably. The damn Republicans in two short years have managed to cram all sorts of crap like that into it, so I'm sure there's a no criticizing policy for "foreigners, damnyankee and otherwise" in there!) :)

His parents, brothers Jeb and Neil and all the grandchildren I have heard speak have no Southern accent. He does. Talk about fake. He was born in New Haven, which is Southern CT. That is as Southern as he is. As for the title of this thread, I am sick of white men running this country. Santorum is a Northerner, remember.

55. I get you, I think. Actors. Focus grouped "everymen" telling us
"hey--I care." Even if they aren't acting, they're in some way trying to be what they aren't, which is the way of the politician most of the time, I imagine. Probably because they think they have to pull that shit to appeal to people. Makes me sick too. Georgie boy calling us "folks" and telling us what "the American People" know and want. Fuck that lowest common denominator bullshit. I'm not saying that the southern accent equals lowest common denominator--I don't think that's what you mean either. I mean they think they can hold up a baby, clear some brush, tell us how much they love Apple Pie and that's all we need to know or want to know for that matter. They think we're idiots with no bullshit detectors.

My guess is that some "brilliant" political mover/shaker, some tv producers, whoever, figured that in the age of Bush, one must be like him to be successful/taken seriously, (Oh to touch the hem of his garment!), so southern white guys are in some sense the fashion. Certainly the status quo. This "I'm like you" lie they seem to think voters get all frothy over--and in this case "like you" apparently means "like this bullshit cowboy 'y'all' seem to love so much." It is insulting and frankly, I think this playacting demeans us all--including the actors. It's got less to do with the region these bullshitters come from and more to do with the act of bullshitting in unison, I think.

If I may quote my pretend boyfriend (and I do hate quoting song lyrics but reading your post got this song in my head so here it is) :

Now, the man on the stand he wants my vote,
He's a-runnin' for office on the ballot note.
He's out there preachin' in front of the steeple,
Tellin' me he loves all kinds-a people.
He's eatin' bagels
He's eatin' pizza
He's eatin' chitlins

Sums up the bullshitting nicely, I do believe.
