Can someone that's a Policeman answer a question PLEASE
Edited on Fri Nov-28-03 03:53 PM by corarose
What are they doing with their bullet proof vests? Do they own the vests or does the police dept own them. Does it depend on what State they are in?

Can we write letters and ask them to donate their Vests to the Boys & Girls in Iraq who can't afford one.

3. I can't speak
for all jurisdictions, only about the one's I'm acquainted with. The vests are not owned by the individual policemen but are owned by the police department.

It may be different in other areas.

2. I think the cops need them.
How about cajoling Bush to use 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of the federal budget to purchase proper protective gear for the troops instead.

7. Good question
Depending on the municipality that they are working for, they'll either have one provided or have to provide their own. I imagine that even cops that have the vests provided, buy better ones on their own anyway. Cheap vests tend to get very warm, and many cops use inflatable liners in addition.

On that though, asking cops to donate their vests is a sad idea. They shouldn't have to. Perhaps you could donate some seatbelts while you're at it.

13. Be careful.
There is a company called Second Chance Body Armor that is being sued by both MA. and GA. because two models of their vests are defective. It may become bigger than this because the material that is the problem is used by other vest manufacturers.

If you are trying to organize this, you should verify that they are not vests from this company or using Zylon because it deteriorates quicker than expected.

15. No, a cop got shot and the bullet went through the vest,
that doesn't appear to be better than nothing.

Aren't they for flying debris and things like that?

17. At the very least I would think they are for sharp objects,
shrapnel maybe and it seems that there would be a chance the vests could be pierced, so what would be their value? Should they be sent over with a disclaimer that they might not protect them from bullets?

There may be many good, used vests available, but this is recent news and I don't know how many police departments are aware that they may have defective vests.

http://www.secondchance.com/news.asp?action=article&newsID=37

The weird thing about this lawsuit is that it was Second Chance themselves who figured out the vests were defective. They recall body armor at random (by exchanging officers' vests for new ones) and test it.

Second Chance makes an exceptional product; their stuff has saved my brother-in-law twice. But they, like everyone else in the armor industry, bought into Zylon and everyone got screwed.

If you're organizing a body armor for soldiers program, you don't want police officers' vests anyway; they will stop handgun fire but not rifle fire. Soldiers must have a vest certified to stop rifle fire; Second Chance's HardCore vest is among those that will do it.

//On edit: added the word 'soldiers.'//

22. My boyfriend owns his own.
Sadly, Kevlar degrades; police-issue vests are often past their useful lives, though few policemen ever have the misfortune to be the proof of that fact.

Better to write your Congressman and Senators, and demand that they appropriate the money to buy proper equipment for our soldiers! :)
