Poll question: Favorite BEATLES flip side? |
|
Song titles in parentheses are the A-sides of the singles in question.

1. Ticket to Ride is one of my favorite Beatles songs |
|
Why it never made the A-side I'll never know ... the opening bars of it still give me chills.

4. Can someone explain to me just what is so great about that song? |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-28-03 04:30 PM by NightTrain
I only included "Walrus" because I figured it would get some votes. But to my ears, it's nothing more than four-and-a-half minutes of drug-addled incoherence.

5. You know how subjective music is, If you don't get it, I can't explain. |
|
It's a great thumping riff, good vocal performance, good orchestration and noise effects.

6. You got that right, daddy-o! |

Same way I can't explain my love of James Brown to someone who doesn't get his music.
As Archie Bunker used to say: "Whatevuh."

9. it isn't the lyrics, its the music. |
|
back then a song was considered cool if it sounded unusual- if it stirred your emotions in that unplaceable way music can. movies were the same way.
Now, either everybody likes cookie-cutter crap, or they haven't figured out that it will go away if you stop buying it. sigh. There's fantastic music and film being made today, it just ain't exactly top of the charts.

14. What? No votes for the Spooky Tooth cover version? |
|
;)
Anyone remember that??
There is, of course, something to be said for drug-addled incoherence. In the context of the times, of course. :) :)

7. One of the unusual things the Beatles did was: |
|
to release double A side singles. On side would say "side A" and the other side would also say "side A". (Why not?, usually both songs were outstanding). I don't know for certain, but I think many of the options listed are actually double A side singles.

8. Hmm.... Well, in that case.... |
|
...the song titles in parentheses were the bigger hit on the 45 in question. Fair enough?

The only "Double A Side" single I know of that they released was Strawberry fields and Penny Lane. It never made it to number one because of that. It was beat out by Humperdinks (sp?) "Release me". But in any case, both tunes were great.
*edit-had the wrong song...but, I still know there was only one.

15. Other - "Things we Said Today" |
|
Other side of "A Hard Day's Night"
Then there's "Eleanor Rigby" back of "Yellow Submarine"
"I'll Get You", back of "She Loves You"
"This Boy" back of "I want to Hold Your Hand"
These are all the British singles, don't know if you got them over here. Oftentimes the other side was as good if not better than the "A" side.

Both should have been the "A" side.

Could have just as easily been Yes it Is, I Should Have Known Better or a few others.
There's a Place (Twist and Shout) is another good one. This is one song Michael didn't get his grubby little hands on.
