Is there a way to find out if someone is dead?

if that person is still living? Friend's first
husband might have left something to her in his
will.

5. Just try the name in quotes...

... or variations on the name and add "obituaries" or "obituary."

Most newspapers which have on-line versions keep the obits archived.

Do you know where he probably would have died? If so, you could figure out what county that is and call the county clerk's office to see if a will has been filed, etc.

You can check the Social Security Death Index at http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com If the death is quite recent they probably won't have it yet, but its worth checking. Good luck.
