Worst commercial made of a great song... |
|
For me it will always be that stupid car commercial they made from Jethro Tull's Thick as A Brick. Like everyone in an English village's life will be made OH SO GOOD if they just see a stupid fucking car. ARRRRRGH!

1. So many ties for first place |

Using Led Zepplin to sell Cadillacs is a crime against nature.
The Tommy Oveture to pedal the anti-alergy Alerga always disturbs me.
Any Old Navy commercial. And McDonald's campaign that used Mac the Knife, still rubs me the wrong way.

2. With the Old Navy commercials |
|
at least theyre 70's Pap-pop so it's not like theyre dilluting an artistic statement.
But with the Tull tune - they don't even include the lyrics (of course if they did it would be telling customers they were all Thick...as a brick)

Then again, I was a toddler when Led was big. So for me, the song fits perfectly with the new brand image they are trying to create. It must be working, Caddilac actually has a car this 20 something would be interested in if he had the money. I'm a car nut, and they are mere objects to me, not representations of the corporations that produce them. Anyways, "Rock and Roll" is a great driving song, just seems natural to use it to sell cars, especially cars that strive to be exciting.

15. That one was a travesty |

Just as the edit of "Fortunate Son" in that commercial obscures the song's message, so did the edit of the cover of the Beatles' "Getting Better" that was used by Philips Magnavox a few years ago which conveniently omits the line "It can't get no worse" for some unintelligle "ahh"'s!

Made me absolutely want to vomit... the commercial is dumb enough (what a surprise the guy with the Hummer is cheating...), but using Happy Jack crossed the line for me, man.

I'm really pissed. Preverts the meaning of the song.

used a song from Singin' in the Rain. "Good mornin', good mornin' to you" became "Good mornin', good muffin, to you."
Don't mess with SITR!

They used the anti-Microsoft/anti-RIAA song "Pass it Along" to sell Dodges (and donated the proceeds to CorpWatch.)
The chorus was...
"Where do you want to go today?/ Somewhere you can never take me..."
Oh, that one made me giggle for hours the first time I heard it!

14. Randy Newman's "Sail Away" bowdlerized into a Beck's beer commercial |
|
That's the corker for me. The original song is a scathingly cynical take on a slave trader tempting people onto a slave ship bound for America.
