I really gotta get over this "Puff the Magic dragon" thing |
|
Edited on Sat Nov-29-03 04:23 AM by HEyHEY
Since I heard it, I can't get off it. The thought of Puff losing his scales from the sadness of his best friend leaving him when he grew up is so sad to me. I posted earlier about my dog and I. I think I may have unresolved issues with it.
I think at the root is my guilt of leaving Nick (my dog) as I grew up...I just wish I coud hear the song without tearing up at the end. Discuss

Puff the Magic Dragon LIVES by the sea, and frolics...
Get it. He LIVES!
Now get over it. :)

3. Some songs can do that to you |
|
There's a country song that I don't hear every often called "Holes In The Floor Of Heaven" by Steve Warniner, about a boy losing his grandmother and then 30 yrs. later his wife dying right before their daughter getting married (can't get anymore depressing than that). The reason it gets to me is because it came out around the same time my own mother passed away unexpectedly. I try to avoid the song as much as I can.

5. All My Childhood Traumas (Part 227: PtMD) |
|
I remember the first time I really listened to that song. I guess I was about four or five. I had a cousin who was a folkie (later to be an elementary-school teacher), and she played it for me and explained the lyrics.
As soon as she went home, I went up to my room and cried. I was depressed for weeks over it, and my pediatrician suggested to my parents that I be put on either Librium or Elavil, two then-new wonder drugs.
They wisely declined and later explained the concept of metaphor to me.

I won't swear to it but I think they made an animated version of Puff The Magic Dragon 2 where he had a new friend.

7. Perhaps if you are feeling guilty... |
|
about abandoning your dog for other things, growing up, you might assauge those feelings by volunteering at a local animal shelter. Most gladly accept folks to walk/play with the dogs. While it won't be your dog, somehow, I think he will know... Just a thought.

12. I was once in a diner in San Francisco when that song came on the jukebox |
|
and the whole place got silent...then my wife started crying, and I did, then I started noticing other people looking sheepish and choked up. It was very strange.
My wife says it's the saddest song ever written, and I gotta agree. There's just something about the melody that accesses the "sadness" part of the brain and makes people weep uncontrollably. It's like Spinal Tap's D Minor chord....
