Old Wives' Tales... Can you think of any good ones? |
|
To this day, it still makes me mad that my mother wouldn't let me go swimming for one full hour after eating. To hear her tell it, I would sink like a stone to the bottom of the pool.
Okay... well, I'm not really mad... but to this day, I still vividly recall the total frustration of having to sit there at the edge of the pool, or having to sit on the beach blanket until one hour had passed.

It's better for your health to be too hot than too cold (so take that heavy sweater to camp, "just in case.")

and hear them from people all the time.
If you get cold, you will get a cold (No, staying inside in dry, nostril cracking warm air, circulating who knows what, in close proximity with ill people is actually great for you). Sarcasm.
Swimming on a full stomach will give you cramps and make you drown (No, but you might not swim as fast).
If you scratch yourself with a pencil, you will get lead poisoning.
Coffee stunts your growth (No, and neither does Ritalin).
Flouride gives you cancer. So does antiperspirant. So does sunscreen. Oh, wait, that makes you go blind. So now, is that full circle?

Don't forget that cats should never be left alone with a baby because the cat will suck the baby's breath away.

My grandma caught a cat on the bed when my mom was a baby. Till theyt day she died, mom STRONGLY disliked cats because she thought one of them might try to finish the job!
