Our Wedding Plans Are Now On Hold. |
|
Dammit.
Thursday we discovered that although the MA supreme court has pretty much guaranteed that same-sex marriage will be legal for MA residents, out-of-state couples will not be able to take advantage of it because of a law already on the books in MA.
Under current MA state law it is illegal to marry in MA if it would be illegal for you to get married in your home state. In other words, even if your marriage *would* be legal according to MA law, you can't get married in MA if it would *not* be legal to do so in the state where you reside. And since we reside in a state that has explicitly made same-sex marriage illegal, we are screwed.
The law was originally passed to make it impossible for people in neighboring states to evade their own state's marriage laws by traveling to MA and marrying there--which is of course exactly what we had been planning to do.
My partner is going to get a second opinion from a lawyer who specializes in GBLT family law, but for now, we are assuming that we cannot get married in MA, and are not telling anyone else about our plans.
Crap, crap, crap, crap, suckity suck suck crap.
Crap,
The Plaid Adder

1. Can't you "move" to MA? |
|
You know, get a post office box, then MA drivers licenses', etc?

use my address! That is such a total bunch of complete bullshit, I can't believe it! I know as a heterosexual, although a never-married one, that we tend to take things like this for granted since, for the most part, we don't have to worry about whether or not our marriages would be considered "legal", but that's BULLSHIT!
I'm sorry, 'cuz I know how much you were looking forward to actually be treated like a full citizen for once.
Just don't move to Ohio, whatever you do, 'cause the anti-gay sentiment is horrible, and it'll be another five thousand years or so before gay marriage would even be considered.
