Demerol definately kicks butt, but for post-surgical pain, nothing beats good old morphine.

I've also had several minor surgeries using "conscious sedation": a combo of Demerol and Versed. This stuff makes you feel so good, that you don't CARE what disgusting indignities the surgeons are committing on your hapless bod (Wheee!! That was Fun! Do it again!"). It would be a hell of a street drug, were it not for the fact that it has to be given in a setting with emergency life-support available, since patients frequently get so laid-back that they forget to breathe...

When I had my back surgery many years ago now. They told me not to be brave and just ask for as much as I needed because it would hurt... a lot. This was before the morphine pump though, so I had to ask for it about every six hours or so.

I took all I could stand. I basically played junkie for a week. ;-)

Ketamine is not on the list, and it ought to be. I thought I'd never be normal again. Took me about a year to recover from that shit.

My father was a heroin addict and died from it, so I've never tried it, although the temptation was there during my nihilist years.

I've done coke twice. Hated it. Turned me into an arrogant Viking-like stomping, yelling thing. Pissed off a lot of people both those times.

After pot, the hardest thing I do nowadays is Benadryl.

.....decided at the tender age of 8 that was not what i wanted to waste a week doing....

mostly pot for me, but i had a problem with methamphetamine for 3 years...solid years...i was also doing a lot of ecstacy back in the mid 80's...when it was pure pharmacutical MDMA...as well as my fair share of halucenogens.

the drug use stopped in may of 1988...a month before i went to boot camp, but i did drink heavily throughout my time in the service...we all did...but i drasticly cut down after i got out in 97, mainly because i could smoke herb again. i gave up herb in december, 2000...

i have now been nearly a year without drinking, not that it was a problem, but that it was hypocritical, in my mind, to work with recovering addicts for a living and still be drinking.

i am still working on cigarettes...but i will not budge on the coffee...lol...

there is no one drug harder than another...an addict is an addict forever, be it coke, heroin or beer. it is a day to day struggle for the addictive personality to resist the urge to use...whatever their poison......

Seriously, though. Those who came through in the 60's and 70's were exposed to a very different culture when it came to drugs. But even if they tried marijauna, or other harder substances, does not mean they became addicted nor do so now... Agreed, though on the risk from alcohol & tobacco, which in the scheme of things are probably far more dangerous... I managed no avoid addiction to either of these. Today's addiction to overeating, junk food, and lack of exercise, is a different story, however (and equally hard to break).

By what measure is one drug harder than the other? IMO, alchohol is as 'hard' as morphine, opium or coke - whereas marijuana, hashish and esctasy are in a class below that. To me a drug's 'hardness' has more to do with how in control of your facilities you are under the influence of that drug, and how addictive it may be. By this measure, Nicotine is a 'hard' drug, and harder than mushrooms.

I suppose there should also be other factors involved - such as how some drugs you cannot OD on (such as marijuana) and others it's really easy.

but I did do acid once when I was about 19 and it was AWFUL! BAD TRIP! I decided to crawl into bed and close my eyes to make it go away (that must have taken me an hour to do) and that just made it worse. I think that experience cured any curiosity I had about drugs for the rest of my life.

I can count on one hand how many times I've smoked pot. It's not that I'm above it - it just makes me get nauseous and sick. A guy a dated in college was convinced he had the solution to this problem and decided he was going to treat me to some good stuff that would not make me sick on my birthday. It was at a party for a professor that was retiring at the college. His theory was that I just had never been exposed to the good shit.

OMFG, I lasted about a half hour at that party. When he helped me out of there we had to navigate steps and I told him if I bend my knees I will collapse, so he held me up and covered my ass getting me out of there. I spent the ride home leaning out the car window barfing.

He picked me up for classes the next morning and there were a lot of comments being made by the instructor and classmates about my not being cut out for champagne. ;-)
