I no longer count as unemployed
No, I haven't gotten a job.

I went to the mailbox expecting my two week unemployment check (after all, the automated system told me I should file again in two weeks, as usual). Instead, I got a check for $167.00...less than a full week. I called to see if I could apply for extended benefits, but the woman on the phone said "There are no extended benefits available at this time." I asked why the automated system didn't tell me that my benefits had run out. A few years ago when I was out of work, the automated voice told me that my next check would only be a partial one, and gave me a number to call. Today, I am told that due to the high number of claims, there must be a glitch in the system. (High number of claims? Dubya says the economy is great!)

So, while I am still unemployed, I will not be counted as unemployed. They only count the people drawing checks. It would have been nice to know that my benefits were running out, since I have to pay the rent by Friday.

1. Oh, and the job I was supposed to hear back on?
The guy from the agency called me yesterday to tell me that the company still hasn't gotten back to them. I guess they told the account rep to go sit on something and rotate.

He does have another job he's submitting me for, so I guess there's still hope.

19. If I had to find a job by the end of today...
I would probably check Hotjobs.com or do a google for help wanted in my area.

Surely there is something out there to tide you over while you look for the job you might really want to keep long-term.

7. The trick there is
You have to have money to buy stuff in order to sell it.

Yeah, time to quit looking for jobs that I'm qualified to do...Time to go do anything.

5. I'm sorry for you grey
Thanks for clearing something up for me though. That's exactly what I thought! Kick um off unemployment and they count the same a homeless New Orleans refugee who had to move into a box! See? says the tyrant, "the people of N.O. are all finally getting into good housing."

13. This method of counting unemployment needs to be scraped.
There needs to be a more accurate way of guaging the workforce. I'm so sorry about your situation. You'll get something good. Sending good karma your way.

15. NGU, I'm so sorry.

Here's an idea. When my father lost his job (and it was a big one in the offices of Stroh's for 30 years), he couldn't find anything...except for a job doing market research. Calling people with surveys over the phone. You're not selling anything, so it is a little bit easier, and you get paid hourly...and it's usually a pretty good rate because they have a hard time finding people. My father actually worked his way up to Supervisor before he got a job in his field.

Best of Luck,

Laura

21. and so the unemployment numbers are improving!
You are one of many (uncounted) "no-longer-unemployed". It's the Bush economy equivalent of a non-person. My household is going through the same thing...a two income household became a one-income household, then a one-income household unaided by any unemployment benefits, then a heavily borrowing and deeply in debt household, and now all my resources and savings are pretty much burned through so we can't even buy groceries. God help us all.

22. That is wretched.
My husband was laid off three times in as many years. It was horribly stressful, although he found new jobs quickly. I can't imagine your level of anxiety right now, being unprepared to get cut off unemployment! I hope a new job comes through ASAP!
