I changed a tire for an elderly gentleman in the pouring rain today... |
|
and he didn't even say thank you. No wonder people don't help each other anymore.

In some way or another, the karma will come back and reward you. That's too bad, though - good on you for not cracking him one with the lug wrench! :toast:

I hate those things. It takes forever to get the car up, and twice that in the rain. Thanks for the kind words.

2. I wonder if he was so upset that he either forgot |
|
or just couldn't bring himself to say it.
It's hard for really old people not being able to do what they were able to when they were young.
I bet he is kicking himself for it now, too---probably feels way worse than you do-

We were in the parking lot of a grocery store. He went inside and shopped while I changed the tire.

on Rt seventeen in South Carolina. His spare was flat too. I 'Loaned' him my spare. And the weeks became months until one day he stopped by my house with a brand new spare. He also thanked me again.

6. It was a good deed you did! |
|
Last winter I was coming home from work in the POURING rain in the mountains and I was going up the 4-lane road near my house and there had been a small rockslide and there were some good sized rocks in the road. It was still daylight, but darkness was approaching fast. If someone hit those rocks in the dark it would have been BAD. So I turned the car around, went back, and stopped in the lane with my hazard lights on and tried to move the rocks. One of the rocks was HUGE and I had trouble moving it, and like, 20 people drove by without stopping!
I was so pissed! A female in the pouring rain trying to remove a safety hazard and people were just driving by!
Finally a dude stopped and helped me! He was very nice. So stopping and helping people is a good deed. :D

Like a jerk or a nice guy? He may have forgotten if he's elderly. My mom has called me after the fact to thank me for things she forgot to do at the time.
Regardless, you did the right thing and that's what YOU have to live with.

he went in the grocery store to shop. By the time he came back, I was finished. The only reason I did it is, both my parents are elderly; and I couldn't stand the thought that they would be stuck with changing a tire in the rain. My dad could probably do it because he is pretty fit for his age, but there is no way that my mom could do it.
This gentleman today looked like Don Knotts. There's no way he could've changed that tire.
I didn't do it for any glory or a pat on the back. I was raised to help others.

out to dinner last weekend. I picked up the tab (about $100 more or less-not that much) and neither thought to even say thank you. I love them to death -they're old friends-but it would have been nice. Just a little acknowledgment.
You did this for a stranger. Thats a whole other ballgame. You get quality points for being a decent human being-something seldom seen nowadays.

F that, I'd have left his car jacked up and he was lucky called AAA for him.
Asshole. Yeah, he's old, but that doesn't grant him immunity from common decency.

I had NO reason to go other than to do him a favor. About halfway through the trip he pulled out a book and started reading. That pissed me off. He could have at least suffered through traffic ~with~ me. Asshole.

People seem to forget that being elderly doesn't mean the person is a saint, or even some nice old man. IMO, he was rude -- he should have stayed outside and chatted, held an umbrella, etc. Being elderly does NOT excuse having common decency.

You can usually feel a spot on the underside of the frame where the jack is supposed to be positioned. On my car there is a flat rectangular indentation that just happens (:tinfoilhat:) to be the same size as the jack.

Probably went back to his home to say how he barely managed to get a tire changed in the rain while some punk gay-supporting young hooligan was trying to rape him with a blasphemous tome of rock lyrics and steal his social security check.

Good work, helping another regardless of the thanks received.
People don't help each other for different reasons than a lack of thanks. It's a lack of compassion, a lack which you seem to not have. If one helps another seeking thanks, then one helps another for one's own benefit (ego).
