"Alas, Babylon" by Pat Frank. |
|
Anyone read it? I think it's one of the classic cold war, post-apocalyptic sci-fi novels. I read it when I was a teenager. Another good one is "Farnahm's Freehold" by Robert A. Heinlein.

1. Yes, what a scary story. |
|
There was a television movie made from it when I was a kid, probably the late 1950s. Scared the crap out of me, though I didn't know the word "crap" yet. Excellent novel.

8. A movie? I didn't know there was a movie |
|
made of that book!
It's one of my all time favorites, one of the best nuclear war books out there, in my opinion. It's one I recommend to people who say they don't like science fiction.
It's somewhat dated, understandably, but for the most part holds up well even after more than forty years. I believe it has never been out of print.

2. For a work of fiction, Alas Babylon seems rather feasible these days. |
|
I highly recommend it to all DU'ers.

4. I read it when I was a teen-ager |

It was required reading but I enjoyed it. Aside from the apocalyptic theme, I don't remember much detail.

5. had to read it in 9th grade |

In the spring, as Reagan's tenure was entering its second year. I enjoyed it immensely, far better than that "The Day After" movie that aired a few years later.

11. I'm so glad others still appreciate this book |

Remember the desperate search for salt (I think they found reference to an old salt-lick in a granparents journal). I love this overall genre of books about post-World War III society and Alas, Babylon is one of the best.
Lucifer's Hammer is also excellent.

12. I First Read It In High School |
|
I read it for a high school English book report as a sophomore in the fall of 1965, and it has stayed with me over the years.
I like the characters, pretty much real-life people, and the account of how they deal with what happens, along with some of the normal personal interactions.

I made my partner read it, and she loved it, too. Both of us have a fascination with apocaplyse movies/books. It's pretty sick.
