40 Drunken Songbirds Die In Austria (Flew Into Windows)

<snip>

VIENNA, Austria -- Booze, not bird flu, killed 40 songbirds in Austria.

That's according to experts who carefully studied the remains of the birds found in Vienna.

A spokeswoman for Vienna's veterinary authority said the disoriented birds flew into windows after gorging themselves on fermented berries full of alcoholic juices. She told Austrian TV that the birds' livers "looked like they were chronic alcoholics."

All died of broken necks.

1. Where'd the birds fill up on booze from?
There is no such thing as a flowing river of beer... or a stream of schotch... And The Lake of Liquor is the Shangri La nobody ever finds...

12. Various fruits will self ferment,
If left on their own. Persimmons, pears, and some other fruits will do this. Birds come by, eat the fermented fruit, and voila, drunk birds.

6. Best response to this post.
:applause:

Birds do have a problem with fermented berry juice. It's pretty comical to watch drunken birds flying in eccentric circles and slipping off the ends of branches.

7. I've seen that happen
A beautiful cardinal flew very, very fast into the too-clean glass door at the office once, as I was standing on the other side of it. POW! We had a fun round of "E's not dead! E's resting!" after that.

10. We have the same problem here with drunken
Canadian Geese. I kid you not. Bradford Pear trees are all over here and the pears, which really shouldn't be eaten by humans, get all alcohol-y, fall to the ground and the geese eat them.

I swear, the first time I saw it, I was in stitches.

Really nothing can be done about it, but we do drive with caution during the spring.

what were they, i'll ask the magic eight ball, and it says if we ever see an update on the story, it'll be "great tits" or "blackbirds"

i actually think it's blackbirds but great tits are fun to say and they're all over europe too
