Breast-feeding too scandalous for Victoria's Secret store
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-nurse03.html

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- In a Victoria's Secret store, surrounded by frilly bras and blown-up images of barely covered models, Lori Rueger says she was told to find somewhere else to breast feed.

Rueger's story -- told during a hearing in support of a state bill to ensure breast feeding is allowed in public places -- so angered a state lawmaker that he's urging women to form a national Mothers Against Victoria's Secret movement.

''It's really kind of subhuman behavior,'' Rep. Walt McLeod (D-Little Mountain) said Wednesday.

Rueger was one of more than a couple of dozen mothers, doctors, lawyers and other breast-feeding advocates who were on hand to urge passage of the bill.

1. We've never had to do that but
I really have no idea why anyone could seriously have a problem with it in the (checks watch and desk calendar) 21st century.

10. You'd be surprised
I've actually heard stories of women who were told by family members not to BF their daughters because it would turn the babies into lesbians. Then there are those who just think it's gross, or who think their son will implode by seeing a naked breast being used for what it was designed for.

2. Irony alert!
and a terrible business decision. do you have any idea how much trouble mothers have finding nursing-friendly clothing? seems like something that would be right up their alley.

3. Breasts are solely in existence for sex, doncha know
Not to feed and sustain children...that is not sexy.

4. Oh for the cryin' out loud...
This story makes me think of a person imploding, then reappearing inside out, having traveled through his own ass to do it.

Actually, lots of stories make me think of that.

Sorry for being crass early in the morning.

5. You have got to be kidding
VS would make a killing if they'd design some attractive nursing bras. Short-sighted tools of the patriarchy.

12. I was all ready to be outraged, but when I read the article...
I see that she was asked to leave a dressing room. Could there be more to the story here? Was there a line for the dressing rooms while this mom was using one to nurse? If she was already in a room, it's not like they could have been concerned someone would see her and get offended.

13. She was told to go to a restroom, though
That's just icky. Maybe a better solution would have been to offer her a chair in a discreet part of the store?

I worked retail in college. We had many customers who would tie up dressing rooms for hours, keeping others waiting, and then not buy anything. We still had to provide decent customer service when they didn't make a purchase.

15. I agree that no one should be told to nurse in a bathroom
The chair idea is better. I wonder if the salesperson thought she was being helpful by suggesting another private place?

I don't know, I normally one of the first to be outraged about prudes who suggest breastfeeding is obscene, but I just can't seem to muster any outrage for this one.

17. Yeah, depends on the salesperson
I can see someone without kids not realizing how that would be an offensive suggestion.

I'm just a bit fed up with a society where we need laws so breastfeeders aren't hassled.

16. Oh, they got me soooo pissed off once
The wife, expecting our first, went into a Victoria's Secret in Reston, VA. She asked the clerk whether they had maternity and nursing Bras. The Clerk told her "no, you have to go to Wal Mart or Target or someplace like thaaaat if you want stuff for preggies." I had never heard such snotty and snide talk since moving out of my childhood home :-)

I would support a boycott of Victoria's Secret....I'm sure someone else would happily provide us with titillating catalogs in the future....
