Just finished watching "Evita" on HBO |
|
I've seen it a few times before, and every time I do, I come to one conclusion: even though Madonna is usually far from being a good actress, she is truly very, very good in this, and was slighted by not being given an Academy Award nomination. Yeah, I'm serious.

1. Did not see Diane Keaton (Marvin's Room ) but I saw |
|
the other nominees:Frances McDormand (Fargo - the winner) Brenda Blethyn (Secrets and Lies) Kristin Scott Thomas (English Patient) and Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves) Any one of them acted circles around Madonna in Evita.

2. Brenda Blethyn should have won that year |
|
But I actually think Madonna deserved the nomination more than Kristin SCott Thomas. JUst my opinion. Never got the KST acclaim for that movie, although Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche certainly deserved theirs.
And, I am NOT a fan of Madonna's acting, or her music after the "Like a Prayer" cd.

3. I beg to differ LostinVA |

Although I like Madonna . . . I saw a live play of Evita performed by "non-named" folks. The actress's name that played Evita escapes me at the moment, but truly, there is nothing like a "trained" voice. I was bowled over! There's truly marvelous talent out there that are not household names!

4. I never said Patti LaPOne, etc. don't have better voices |

I'm talking about the FILM "Evita," and that I think alot of people dismissed Madonna in that film because she was Madonna, and had some real dogs attached to her. I watched it today for the first time in several years, and was struck by what a very good job she did. She got the Golden Globe nomination that year, as did (rightly, imo) Courtney LOve for "Larry Flynt." Just saying there would have been nothing snicker-inducing if the Academy had given her (and yes, even Courtney LOve) Oscar noms. That's it.

wrong LostinVA . . . I did see Madonna's film, and yes, I agree with you, she did a marvelous job. And I've listened to her Evita CD numerous times and just love it. But when I saw a live performance, by an actress with a truly trained voice, with a voice for that part, it truly can not be compared. I hope that I have not offended you.

I saw "Rent" live, by an off-Broadway company. And, as good as the movie was... no comparison at all!

9. I absolutely agree. She was born to play that role and nailed it. |
|
She was wonderful... and only made a perfect score even more perfect.
LOVED Banderas in it too. Why IS he with Melanie Griffith? I just love him.
