Ron Howard's "The Missing" - Rabrrrrrr's review contained herein
I saw it this afternoon. And, as I predicted in the thread we had about this last night, it didn't work at all.

I mean, it sucked in that typically Ron Howard method of sucking. Too many subplots, no actual real plot, no cahracter development, lots of emotional manipulation, a fair amount of half-ass attempts at "artistic" cinematography of the beautiful New Mexico landscape that never failed to, well, fail... it was that Ron Howard way of sucking that is almost a really amazing movie, and one feel constantly that "Ooh - this is gonna be a cool scene!" and then every time he drops the ball and misses it.

Yeah, overall it sucked. Howard even managed to get below par performances from Tommy Lee Jones and Cate Blanchet.

Why do studios let this assmunch continue to direct? My God, with the cast tehy had, and the money they surely spent on this movie, if it were me putting up that many resources, I'd demand a director worthy of the expense.

1. I differ
I agree the direction was bad. The movie was needlessly long, with too much crap thrown in. The first half hour I really enjoyed, but once it went from snow to sun, it lost me. I thought Blanchett and Jones were both really good, as were the actresses playing the daughters, particularly the youngest one.

I agree Ron Howard is not a very nuanced director. He has a pretty set formula he uses, and I am never surprised in his movies. There is never a scene or shot that doesn't remind me of something I have already seen. He is competent, but he is not an artist.

2. So tell me then, how can you say "I differ"?
Seems we're in total agreement!

3. you said he got sub par performances from Blanchett and Jones
I thought they were both quite good. That's where we differ. Perhaps i should have said partially disagree.

4. Oh, I think they were still good
They just weren't as good as they are capable of, and the blame is squarely on Howard's shoulders, not theirs.

Just like Lucas is able to get shitty performances from such incredible actors/actresses like Liam Neeson and Christopher Lee and the rest of the cast.

5. I considered seeing this
until I heard it was a Western. I just don't like Westerns. But you are right, it should have been a good movie with the cast they hired and the money that they spent to make it. Most movies, these days, are pretty bad. At least this wasn't another remake.
