Two of Slinkerwink's Dirty Secrets Now Out into the Open......
Edited on Sun Nov-30-03 03:34 AM by slinkerwink
1)Many people think I have an Eastern European accent even though I'm deaf. My father tonight said I had a New England accent which confused me further. "Wasn't I supposed to have a Balkan accent?" I asked him. It's a really long story about the Balkan accent....;-)

2)I like being in GD more than in the DU Lounge---is that so bad?

1. GD more than DU?
You mean, GD more than the lounge?

I didn't know you were deaf - and interesting you'd pick up a Balkan accent in your speaking. Or does it mean you have a Balkan accent when signing?

I've often wondered - can one can have an accent in signing? Are there definite differences in style based on teachers or methodology that one can tell? Or even word usage in the signing? Does someone from Alabama sign differently (either physically different, or word usage different) from someone in Maine or Nebraska?

5. How did you become deaf?
Must suck :(. I am like nearly blind in my left eye due to some kind of disease. BTW I love Eastern European accents heh, hell with my Irish ancestry thats my favorite part, ze German is ok, but the Eastern Europe and Irish mix is great.

7. I became deaf due to an allergic reaction to penicillin at 6 mos
and progressively became profoundly deaf. I got the cochlear implant when I was 7 so I pretty much can hear like you can except with an on-off switch. ;-) Hearing aids amplify sound but cochlear implants recreate sound through electric signals carried to the implant from the microphone on my aid, and my auditory nerve interprets those electric signals as sound.

8. I feel bad for ya but you seem to hold your own which is good
I wish we had regonized my eye problem sooner though, then I could have got my permit a long time ago, and laser surgery wont do the trick. Oh I see, youre not really that deaf but you need like aid. Sad these things happen you know.

14. So this means you can't answer my questions about signing and accent?
Sad.

Glad to read that you can hear through your implants, though.

How well do they work? Can you listen to music and get it all? Or is there a sginificant loss of bandwidth and information in the processing?

16. they work pretty well.....
I can listen to music-----right now, I really like Billie Holiday and Coldplay. Their lyrics are rather easy to listen to as opposed to heavy rock where the background music practically drowns out the lyrics.

I read about the new haircut and the wrong Patrick.

Is that the new haircut in the wallpaper on the page? You asked in your entry "how do you like it?" but you didn't actualy specify which picture is the new haircut - the wallpaper, or the one at the top of the page?

Either way, though, looks GREAT!

Or it could be the snapfish icon that shows up in that post?

30. You Don't Look Deaf...
Just adding my inane two bits there, when what I mean is I wish I photgraphed that well! If those are *bad* photos of you, excuse me while I get over an irrational fit of pique. Okay, better now.

As for Deaf accents, it seems they are a bit 'head voicey' and to varying degrees, nasally placed and that could account for the New England opinion.

Nothing at all wrong with hanging out in GD; I lurk there a lot but don't post much.

34. I'm half Turkish too.
And half Finnish.

And I didn't know you were deaf... I guess a lot of people who are deaf and hard of hearing can still talk, as well as read lips, so when you speak with someone like that, it's really like you don'y notice that someone's deaf at all.

9. Of course I never even considered that you were deaf
Interesting that you would have an accent??

Nothing noteworthing about prefering GD over the Lounge. I'm staying out of GD for the most part until after the Primary.

12. well, it's a deaf accent
but since most people have never met a deaf person that speaks (their only perception about the deaf is that they only communicate through sign language) so....when they meet a deaf person that can hear as well as speak, their first thought isn't that I'm deaf, just that I'm from a foreign country.

17. people think I have an accent as well because my braces and stuff make
me sound funny. That nutcase who IMed me last night said I sounded Mongolian, whatever. One of the DUers I met when I went to the protest, a native new yorker said I didnt have a southern accent, I am from VA, and honestly I was relieved. I dont like the idea of having one.

22. Yes I have met deaf people and I am aquainted with
how they talk. Varying degrees of signing and speaking.

I've spent several most of my adult life around disabled children and adults. Not so much anymore, but in years past.

24. Hey slink -- wondered where you'd been...
You were a "Lounge legend" for awhile there!

But then I saw your posts in GD. It gets a bit hairy over there, and can get down and dirty on rare occasions. (As we move into the primaries, this will probably happen a bit more often.)

So, even if you sound like an Eastern European from New England (an interesting mix!), it's good to see you posting and participating.
