Cold Mountain
Anybody else looking forward to this movie? I read the book when it first came out but I am now rereading it and had forgotten what an incredible novel it was. Any thoughts on the impending movie? I think that Inman could have been better cast than Jude Law but time will tell on that. I'm enjoying the book much more the second time around.

1. I've seen the preview a number of times, and every time
I think, "This movie is gonna suck. It looks poorly made - cliche ridden in extremis."

Really sad, because although I don't know the story (haven't read it), from the preview the story seems like a really cool one. But I think this movie is gonna totally screw it up, and I won't be going to see it.

2. Can't do it.
IMO it was horribly cast. Especially Nicole Kidman (too old) and Renee Zellweger (too cute). Jude Law is an improvement over Tom Cruise, though. TC was supposed to be Inman before the breakup.

3. We'll see. The best books are
regularly butchered when the movie is made. I'm dreading Will Ferrel in a "Confederacy of Dunces".

Cold Mountain was a great (though depressing) book. I hope the movie is worthy.

4. Jude Law is a very capable actor.

Like Brad Pitt, I think to an extent he is a victim of his good looks and his acting isn't really noticed as much as he is. But he's going to do a good job. Also, many British actors take their acting more seriously than their American counterparts (from my very shallow observation).

I can't stand Nicole Kidman, but I already see an Oscar showdown between she and Gwyneth Paltrow.

I do agree with whomever said it looks cliche riddled... but it is directed by Anthony Minghella, who directed The English Patient. The EP wasn't like the book very much, but I liked it anyway.

5. I'm very much looking forward to it but I haven't read the book
btW I love Nicole Kidman. The last few movies she's been in has proven her to be an excellent actress (she was incredible in The Human Stain).

6. I thought the book was
quite good up until the ending. I won't give it away for those who haven't read it, but I'm sorry, I couldn't buy it. I wonder if they'll keep the same ending.

I've been seeing the previews also, and expect it will lack the emotional depth and intensity of the book, but people will be gulled into thinking it does because the music will be great and the scenery just awesome.

Didn't realize North Carolina had snow-capped mountains. Amazing what I can learn by going to the movies.

Kind of like The Deer Hunter. In the beginning, when the guys go hunting and they're above the treeline in whatever mountains in Pennsylvania their supposedly hunting in. Almost fell out of my seat laughing at that.

I really hate it when Hollywood gets things wrong there's no need to get wrong.

8. Okay, I guess I'll take your word for it.
But aside form the fact I know that the movie was filmed in Europe, those don't look like any mountains in the southern part of this country.

Snow capped mountains in North Carolina. Really.
