I want to give up Mountain Dew HELP
I drink only one 24 ounce bottle of Dew a day. You would think I could give it up but I guess there is enough caffeine in it to cause me headaches when I don't drink it.

Giving up Dew will help me start a new eating program. It's my one obstacle (well that and noodles, so I have two obstacles).

I am targeting Christmas weekend as the time to stop "dewing the Dew" because we get two days off at Christmas so I'll have a four day weekend.

Any suggestions...also I don't like tea so suggesting I drink some herbal tea wont do but thanks anyway. I know the herbal tea people mean well.

1. Have you tried the caffeine-free Mountain Dew?

Might be a good intermediate step, rather than having to go cold turkey.

I can't drink large amounts of anything w/caffeine in it so the caffeine-free stuff is one of my few vices.

3. A friend of mine gave up caffeine recently
and also is on a low-carb diet (20g/day). He says his withdrawal took only a couple days and he feels much better over the course of the day. No highs or lows generated by caffeine or wild swings in blood sugar.

2. Weaning is a good method, a little caffeine can stave off the pain
slowly reduce the amount of daily caffeine instead of cold turkey

also exercise will increase your metabolism and make up for some

of the tiredness that withdrawl may bring.

There is nothing wrong with caffeine, so far as anyone knows, in

moderation. I suspect it is other ingredients in the Dew that

might concern you more.

4. that is what I was going to suggest

maybe mix decaf dew with regular dew and gradually wean yourself. Good luck. I know I drink way too much dew but since I have so many others things to work on, I won't have to wean myself off of it until I'm about....hum... 210.

5. I'm a caffeine addict
And recently went through detox. I had headaches for about 3 days. My addiction was profound, though - I drank a lot of coffee.

The suggestion of weaning gradually will help with your withdrawal symptoms - however, in any case, it won't last long.

I have read that Mountain Dew is very difficult and damaging for the liver to process. Sounds like a good thing to give up.

6. Thanks for all the wonderful advice
on not dewing the Dew.

I never knew it was hard on the liver. Throughout my life I have tried to stay away from things that harmed my body. To know that I may have harmed my liver saddens me. That is enough to make me give it up.

7. I believe Mountain Dew has one of the highest caffeine contents
among sodas.

I understand your addiction because I drink a couple of cans of Pepsi everyday and get headachy if I don't. However, that does go away after a day or 2 without soda. I think as suggested above that switching to a different soda, and less caffeine, would help as an intermediate step. Also, you mention drinking 24 ounces--you could try cutting down to one can before letting go completely.

Painkillers such as Excedrin contain caffeine (check labels) so maybe one of those would help.

11. 54 mg. of caffeine for each 12 oz. can

So drinking 24 oz would be equivalent to about one cup of coffee. That's Mountain Dew I'm referring to. Pepsi is 39 mg per 12 oz can, if I remember correctly.

8. how to get off caffeine
It only takes three days but plan to stay in bed with some aspirin on hand in case the headaches get really severe.

It's well worth it. Health issues of 20 years' standing cleared up when I gave up caffeine, including chronic pain and fatigue.

9. Go caffeine free MD and then
Diet caffeine free.
And then make coolade/lemonade/tea with Splenda.

Good luck.
