What Bands are Sellouts?
Many bands have been accused of selling out for various reasons. Either because their sound changed or because they seem to only be doing things for money. I think that the phrase sell out is somewhat subjective. So could someone tell me which bands are sell outs and why?

5. You can't necessarily
hold that against the artists. They may not hold the copyright on their music, and someone else might be selling them out. Remember the Beatles Revolution being used by Nike? It was b/c the band members and Lennon's estate didn't own the music (I think Michael Jackson did?).

I don't know about LZ and whether they own their music or not. I just wanted to point out that a number of artists have no control over how their music is screwed up in commercials.

7. They used to have the rights to their own music...
they were one of the few bands back then that made sure their contracts stipulated their music was their own. I read somewhere that it was Plant who let them use their songs for commercials, and that Page was upset about it. I don't know anything more than that.

The Blasphemization of "Kashmir" by P Diddy which Page was a willing partner to :puke:

33. Probably...
Funnily enough, our local rock radio station started calling them Old Greedy Balding Bastards. Basically because they were suing everyone, and they were afraid to use their name in fear of getting sued. lol

They were never a good band to begin with - don't you have to be good before you can be accused of "selling out"?

15. Since the nature of the music business change so much during the eighties
with Ginormous Record companies merging into some faceless single entity pushing horrid amusical product, I would passionately declare any musician currently tailoring his or her music to meet the demands of the major label marketplace a sellout.

Fuck the major labels, support independent music wherever it may be found.

Now, this does not include "catalog" artists like Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Neil Young, etc. who were signed during the days when all record companies operated independently of each other and were not tied to multinationals with questionable politics and business practices. This applies to any major label act taking the advice of "cool merchant" demographic-chasing, music-killing major label, at whose feet we must lay blame for the ills of the current music scene.

Having said that, let me name some "older" artists who have sold out either by stripmining their music to meet the supposed "demands" of the ever-changing marketplace or by becoming conservative politically, or by whoring for multinationals:

Rod Stewart
The Stones
Genesis/Phil Collins
Pink Floyd/Roger Waters
The Who
The Lemonheads
Ben Folds (dropped his band at the behest of his record company)
Henry Rollins
James Brown (shilled for Nixon)
Lou Reed
Ray Charles (shilled for Pepsi, Played Sun City)
Ozzy Osbourne

The actor(can't think of his name) that does voiceover for CNN used to take speach lessons. He used to host the new version of 'The outer limits' and his presence and speech is outstanding.

29. Sting is a shrewd marketer, though
He did the Jaguar commercial with "Desert Rose" because radio wouldn't touch it for being too weird. So he did the commercial and people requested the song like crazy. Became a big hit.

Can't fault a guy for that.

Not all musicians that do commercials are sellouts. Take Bob Seger. You've all seen the "Like A Rock" commercials. I saw an interview with him in which he said he did it to help out the auto industry in his native Detroit. He figured that if Mellencamp could do it with Farm Aid, he was justified in doing things to help his hometown. I'll go along with that.

Some artists have good reasons to do commercials.

21. The Offspring
They used to be a pretty cool punk-rock band.. but I guess they eventually decided to secure their economy by doing some really mainstream songs..

I don't blame them though

30. The biggest sellout of them all - The Who
They were punk before punk even existed.

Now they're all about the money. Time has not treated them well.

They continued the tour even after John Entwhistle died.

They play onstage with a large supporting cast including a large backup band and an orchestra. Ugh!

32. Elton John.
He and Taupin (sp?) supposedly write these tender, emotional anthems, but they will just as quickly scribble something together to settle a bet (Philadelphia Fredom) or quickly rewrite some old chestnut to supposedly honour someone they supposedly loved (Goodbye England's Rose). Anything to keep them on the public's radar.
